2002 Semifinals
Tulsa, Oklahoma - The Western Athletic Conference Tennis Championship puzzle has been completed with the top-seeded SMU men's tennis team and the Mustangs third-seeded women's tennis squad, along with Fresno State's top-seeded women's team and Tulsa's second-seeded men's squad all advancing to Sunday's final. Both matches will begin at 11:00 a.m. at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center at The University of Tulsa.

The Tulsa Golden Hurricane made the most of its home-court advantage in the final WAC men's semifinal match against the third-seeded Rice Owls. Tulsa's doubles teams powered the Hurricane to the all-important doubles point with an 8-5 win at No. 2 and a 9-7 victory at No. 3.

The Mustang men's team made their 2002 WAC Tennis Championship debut with a solid, 4-1, win over fifth-seeded Boise State. The Broncos (11-13) started strong winning the doubles point and played tough throughout the match, but the Mustangs (17-12) came through with four-straight singles wins to clinch the victory.

The SMU women's squad (16-11) advanced with a 4-2 upset win over second-seeded Boise State (21-4). After taking the doubles point, 2-1, the Mustangs continued to play strong. With the singles score tied 2-2, freshman Allison Leuszler led the Mustangs to victory at the No. 6 spot with a 6-7, 6-0, 6-4 win over Boise State's Alissa Ayling. The Broncos had to return to action Saturday after finishing their quarterfinal match after 3:00 a.m. this morning.

In the final women's semifinal match of the day, which was played outside, top-seeded Fresno State outlasted a feisty fourth-seeded Tulsa team, 4-1, to join third-seeded SMU in the WAC title match on Sunday. The 25th-ranked Bulldogs (15-5) earned the all-important doubles point with a pair of 8-1 wins at the top and bottom positions.

The SMU men's team is looking for its second WAC Championship, while the women look for their first title. Last season, both teams lost in the semifinal round. The SMU women fell to Fresno State, 4-1. The Bulldogs also stopped the men by a 4-3 margin.
