DENVER Nevada first baseman JaRell McIntyre and San Jose State right-handed pitcher Matt Durkin have been named the Western Athletic Conference Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for April 1-7.
McIntyre, a senior from Elk Grove, Calif. (Laguna Creek HS), hit. 538 (7-13) in three games last week against Hawaii. He was 3-for-4 with one RBI in the first game, 3-for-5 and scored two runs in the second game and was 1-for-4 with a run in the final contest. Between the first and second games, McIntyre had a streak of six consecutive hits.
Durkin, a freshman from San Jose, Calif. (Willow Glen HS), improved to 5-1 on the season after a complete-game 2-1 victory versus third-ranked Rice on Sunday. Durkin allowed one run, one walk, nine hits and struck out 10 to snap the Owls 15-game conference winning streak.
Other player of the week nominations included: junior center fielder Arthur Guillen, Hawaii; junior first baseman Kyle Humphreys, Louisiana Tech; freshman shortstop Paul Janish, Rice; and sophomore third baseman Kevin Frandsen, San Jose State.
Additional pitcher of the week nominations included: junior Ben Fritz, Fresno State; junior Chris George, Hawaii; sophomore Mateo Miramontes, Nevada; and freshman Philip Humber, Rice.
