Boise State Men Crack Top 25

The Boise State men entered TrackWires top 25 for the first time this outdoor season, tying for 23rd with 11 points. They are led by a throwing duo of Justin St. Clair and Rob Minnitti. Also in the top 25 for the men are SMU and UTEP who are ranked sixth and 14th, respectivley. For the women, Rice leads the way coming in at No. 13, while SMU lands 23rd.

Men
SMUs Libor Charfreitag won the hammer with a toss of 72.78m at the Drake Relays. This is his fourth win in this event in as many tries. Rices Reed Ballis won the high jump with a provisional mark of 7-1 , the second best in the WAC this season.

Women
Abbey Elsberry of Boise State won the hammer and shot put at the Outback Invitational. Elsberry broke the Boise State record with a throw of 191-1 (58.25m) in the hammer. SMUs Karin van Rooyen was the top collegiate finisher at the Drake Relays in the 3,000m, running the event with the second fastest time in Mustang history, 9:34.29, 30 seconds faster than her nearest competitor. Crystal Simmons of Fresno State continued her dominance, capturing three individual titles and one relay in the five-team field. She ran the second leg of the 4x100m winning relay team, took first in both the triple and long jump and was victorious in the 100m hurdles. Jamese James of Tulsa provisionally qualified for the 400m hurdles by winning the event at the Drake Relays with a time of 57.86. Hawaiis Alethe West won the 5,000m with a time of 17:41.49 at the UC San Diego Open.

Meets and Results
Outback Invitational

Boise State hosted the Outback Invitational in Boise, Idaho April 27. They were led by Justin St. Clair who won the javelin with a Boise State record throw of 241-6 (73.62m) breaking the record of teammate Rob Minnitti who set it earlier this year with a throw of 241-0 (73.47 meters). Both throws are NCAA automatic qualifying marks. Ray Ardill won the 400m dash in a time of 47.57, while Kenny Johnson won the triple jump with a leap of 47-6 1/4. The Broncos also took first in the 4x400m relay with a time of 3:14.54. For the women, Trina Rogers took the javelin with a throw of 149-2. Abbey Elsberry won the shot put, clearing 44-11 and set a Boise State record in the hammer with a throw of 191-1 breaking Gloria Butlers record of 186-9 set in 2000.

Drake Relays
Rice, SMU, UTEP, Louisiana Tech and Tulsa all headed to Des Moines, Iowa, for the 93rd Annual Drake Relays. For Rice, Shannon Murto set a new school record in the steeplechase with a time of 10:18.83, and Tanya Wright won the 800 meters with a time of 2:07.65, over two seconds faster than second place. Allison Beckford won the 400m hurdles with an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 56.72. The time is the second fastest in the nation among Division I competitors. For SMU, Irache Quintanal won the womens discus with a toss of 51.86m. Libor Charfreitag won the mens hammer toss, clearing 72.78m, winning his fourth straight meet. Eva Charfreitag took second in the womens hammer with a toss of 55.59m. Freshman Karin van Rooyen was the top collegiate finisher in the 3,000m, running the event in 9:34.29, the second fastest time in SMU history and almost 30 seconds faster than the nearest college competitor. For UTEP, Janne Sakko finished second in the javelin behind four-time Drake Relay Champion Scott Russell of Kansas, with a provisional throw of 226-0 (68.90m). Henderson Dottin leaped to a third-place finish in the high jump, clearing 7-0 1/4 (2.14m). Tawio Ajibade finished third in the 100m with a time of 10.61. For Tulsa, Jamese James became the first Golden Hurricane to win an individual title at the Drake Relays breaking the school record in the 400m hurdles with a time of 57.86. Sarah Haskins finished fourth in the 10,000m with a time of 35:55.03, shaving just over two minutes off her personal-best time. The Hurricane sprint-medley relay team finished second with a school-record time of 3:57.00.

UNTwilight
SMU headed to Denton, Texas, for the North Texas Twilight. Discus throwers Hannes Hopley, Janus Robberts, Peter Mitsides and Matt McKinney finished first, second, third and fourth, respectively, in the event. Hopley and Robberts posted NCAA provisional marks of 56.96m and 57.46m, respectively, while Irache Quintanal posted an NCAA provisional mark in the womens discus with a winning effort of 48.46m.

UC San Diego Open
Hawai`i attended the UC San Diego Open in La Jolla, Calif. They were led by Carolyn Berger who set a new school record in the 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 11:38.51. The Rainbows also had five more season-best marks.

Sac State/CS Bakersfield
Both the Fresno State men and women took first in their final home meet of the season. The men totaled 231 points, while the women tallied 304. On the mens side, Javon Kemp took first in the javelin with a NCAA Provisional mark and personal-best throw of 194-3. Leif McMurry and Justin Schwartz vaulted 15-0 to earn first and second in the pole vault. Kyle Carano cleared a season-best 50-3 1/2 in the triple jump, while Mike Guidry won the discus with a throw of 171-3m. In the 1,500 meters, Roosevelt Cook took first with a time of 3:55.10. Finally, in the 200m, Chris Berrian won in a hand-time of 21.6. For the women, Crystal Simmons captured three individual and one relay first place titles. Simmons won the long and triple jump with leaps of 18-8 3/4 and 41-5. She won the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.12. April Wiechmann grabbed first in the hammer at 179-2, while Kristin Schelir won the shot put with a mark of 46-9 1/2. Kayla Russum took first in the javelin with a throw of 145-4 and Bergann Hernandez won the pole vault clearing 12-0. Katie Christianson cleared a personal-best 5-3 3/4 to win the high jump, Nicolin Neal won her first race of the season with a time of 11:49.5(h) in the steeplechase, while Kara June won both the 1,500 (4:39.4(h) and the 5,000 meters (17:53.0(h). Ocie Parks won the 100m in 11.91.

Louisiana Monroe Classic
Louisiana Tech competed in the Louisiana Monroe Classic picking up a few top finishes. Sara Gelin placed first in the triple jump with a mark of 39-9 3/4 and Keely Perkins won the shot put with her throw of 44-3 1/2. Mashonda Sneed was second in the 800m, while Ayanna Alexander grabbed third in the 200m. For the men, Carlos Eugene won the triple jump, clearing 52-4 1/2.

Bill Williams Invitational
Tulsa split squad headed to Joplin, Mo., for the Bill Williams Invitational at Missouri Southern State College. Leading the way were April Johnson who won the 800m (2:23.27), sophomore Suzanne Smith who won the 100m hurdles (15.26), senior Mary John-Williams who won the triple jump (11.57m) and freshman Jamal Bogle who won the 400m hurdles (58.24m).
