Nevada first/third baseman Mike Gillies and San Jose States left-handed pitcher Jahseam George have been named the Western Athletic Conference Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for May 6-12.
Gillies, a senior from Port, Moody, BC (College of S. Idaho), hit .500 (9-18), drove in seven runs and scored five runs for the Wolf Pack last week. Gillies opened the week going 3-for-5 in an 11-9 win over Pacific. He hit a home run in each of his first three at bats against the Tigers, driving in five. In a three-game series against Fresno State, Gillies went 6-11, driving in two, scoring twice. Of his nine hits on the week, five were for extra bases, giving him a slugging percentage of 1.111. Gillies had a hit in all four games and multiple hits in three of them.
George, a senior from Clovis, Calif. (BYU), earned a 5-0 win over Rice, handing the Owls their first shutout since March 31, 2000. George allowed no runs on four hits, walking four, while striking out three. He did not allow a hit past the fourth inning, retiring 13 straight Owls. George (9-1) became the second Spartan to reach the nine-win mark this season.
