Through one day of competition at the NCAA Men's Golf Regionals, Fresno State is tied for third in the west, while Nevada is 15th. Individually, UTEP's Chris Baryla is tied for 36th. In the central, SMU is tied for sixth, while Tulsa is 13th.
In Albuquerque, N.M., Fresno State is tied for third with Minnesota and UNLV at 290 (+2). The Bulldogs are being led by seniors Jonathon Echols and Dustin Smith as they are both tied for fifth at 70(-2). WAC Player of the Year Nick Watney is tied for 36th with a 74(+2). Nevada has a 15th-place showing following Thursday's first round in the 27-team NCAA West Regional. Nevada shot a 299 but was only five shots out of 10th place. Ian Hagen leads the way, shooting a 74 while Carlos Concha, Mike Haack and Sprague Kolp each shot 75.
The University of Texas leads the tournament with 285 (-3). Individually, Chris Baryla of UTEP stands six strokes back of the leader, shooting an opening-round 74. The top 10 teams advance to the NCAA Championships in two weeks following Saturday's final round in the three-day, 54-hole event at the the University of New Mexico's Championship Course.
In Little, Rock Ark., SMU is in a tie for sixth place at the NCAA Central Regional being played at Pleasant Valley Country Club. After a first-round 69 by senior Franklin Hatchett that included five birdies on the back nine, SMU carded a three-over 291 for round one. The WAC first teamer Hatchett shot an even-par 36 on the front nine, before opening a birdie barrage on the back nine that included one-under scores at number 10, 11, 12, 14, and the closing par five 18. Hatchett's 69 was just one back of TCU's Bret Guetz and John Kirdwell who both posted four-under 68s. Brock Mulder shot a first round 71, while teammate Jerome Theunis finished with a three-over 75. Tulsa is in 13th place following the first round, carding an eight-over 296, and sits just nine strokes behind Oklahoma State who leads the event with a one-under 287. Junior Billy Lowry continued his strong play from a week ago carding a one-under par 71 Thursday and is in an eight-way tie for 13th place. Neil Trimm, who sits in 24th place overall, shot an even-par 72.
