NCAA Womens ChampionshipThe 2002 NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championships will take place May 21-24 at Washington National Golf Club in Auburn, Wash. This year's event will feature 24 teams that qualify from three NCAA Regional sites (East, Central, West) plus six at-large individual competitors (two from each region). The championship format consists of both team and individual competition conducted concurrently. All participants will compete throughout the entire 72 holes of competition. In the team competition, the low four scores for each team will count in each day's total score. A total of 126 competitors will comprise this year's field.
Tulsa Wins Central, Heads to NCAA ChampionshipTulsa captured the team title at the NCAA Central Regional at the Forest Akers West Golf Course in East Lansing, Mich., on May 11, with a final round two-over par 290. The Golden Hurricane were led by WAC Player of the Year Stacy Prammanasudh, who shot a one-under par 71 on the final day en route to winning the regions individual crown. The individual title for Prammanasudh was the 10th of her career, just one shy of the school record held by Nancy Lopez. Prammanasudh completed the three-day tournament with a three-over par 219, four strokes better than second-place Martina Gillen of Kent State. After beginning the day in third place, Tulsa received strong showings on the final day from sophomore Suzie Fisher, who shot a two-over par 219 to finish tied for 11th. Sophomore Julie Tvede also had an outstanding performance for the Hurricane, shooting a one-under par 71, tying with Fisher for 11th place. Senior Dani Mallon completed the day with a three-over par 75. Tulsa finished four strokes better than Ohio State and Texas who tied for second. The Hurricane's final-round 290 was the best team effort of the day, while Prammanasudh's 219 was the second best on the final day. The title gave Tulsa its third straight tournament and its fifth tournament of the season and the most since the Hurricane won eight tournaments during the 1984-85 season. It also marked the second straight-year Tulsa won the Central Region title.
Mens NCAA Regionals
West Fresno State finished in ninth place in the west regional, 15 strokes over par for a 879 finish. The Bulldogs had three players place in the top-29. WAC Player of the Year Nick Watney finished third carding rounds of 74-69-71-214(-2). Jonathan Echols tied for 14th at 217(+1), while Dustin Smith tied for 29th and with a score of 220(+4).
Nevada settled for 16th place with a final round 298 in carding an 890, missing qualifying for the NCAA Championships by eight strokes. Sprague Kolp, Mike Haack and Ian Hagen tied for 44th shooting a six-over 222, while Carlos Concha shot a 74 and a 224 to tie for 60th.
UTEP's Chris Baryla, the lone WAC individual in the west, finished with a 221, but did not qualify for the championship.
CentralThe Tulsa men's golf team joined the TU women golfers by qualifying for the NCAA Championships with a third-place finish on Saturday at the NCAA Central Regional. The Hurricane carded a final round 297 and finished the three-day event with a 12-over par 876 total. The Hurricane, who began day in sixth-place, finished 11 strokes behind co-champions Oklahoma State and Purdue. Tulsa snapped a string of six years of failing to qualify for the NCAA Championships. Chris Noel finished 12th, carding a final round 72 for an even-par 216 total, while Billy Lowry shot a one-over par 218 for 17th.
The SMU men's golf team posted a third and final round score of 308 (+18) to finish 14th. The Mustangs were unable to improve from its 12th place position at the beginning of the day, finishing 14th overall. Franklin Hatchett finished tied for fifth in individual play with a final round 71 to finish three-under for the tournament. He earned a bid to the NCAA championship with his finish. Brock Mulder ended the tournament with a 76, placing him in a tie for 26th overall. Jerome Theunis fired his highest round of the tournament with a 77, finishing tied for 62nd with a 226. Ryan Abbate also recorded a personal high round for the tournament with a final round 82.

In the team competition, the low four scores for each team will count in each day's total score.
