Louisiana Tech's Amber Obaze was named as one of 16 finalists for the USA World Championship team by the USA Basketball Women's Collegiate Committee following three days of trials involving 36 of the nation's top players 19 years old and younger.
Obaze and the other finalists will return to Colorado Springs on July 7 for the USA team training camp that will run through July 11. Following those five days, the roster will be trimmed to 12 players who will represent the USA in Ribeirao Preto, Brazil, July 17-21.
The Dallas, Texas, native earned second team all-Western Athletic Conference honors as well as Kodak All-District accolades following a sophomore campaign that saw her average 12.1 points and 4.6 rebounds a game while leading the Lady Techsters to the conference title and the program's 21 straight NCAA Tournament appearance.
The 16 finalists include: Jacqueline Batteast (Notre Dame), Steffanie Blackmon (Baylor), Kara Brown-Braxton (Georgia), Shameka Christon (Arkansas), Vanessa Hayden (Florida), Ebody Hoffman (Southern California), Amber Jacobs (Boston College), Laurie Koehn (Kansas State), Kelly Mazzante (Penn State), Amber Obaze (Louisiana Tech), Nicole Ohlde (Kansas State), Jia Perkins (Texas Tech), Cappie Poindexter (Rutgers), Heather Schreiber (Texas), Stacy Stephens (Texas) and Lindsay Whalen (Minnesota).
