The NCAA Division I Men's Golf Committee has selected the teams and individuals that will participate in the 2002 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship. Four WAC teams and one individual were selected to compete. From the Central Region, Tulsa and SMU were selected, while from the West, Fresno State, Nevada and Chris Baryla of UTEP will attend.
The three regional tournaments will all be held on May 16-18 at their respective sites.
The Championship will be held on May 29-June 1 at the Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio and will be hosted by Ohio State.
In the Central Region, Tulsa was selected as the No. 12 seed, while SMU entered as the No 14 seed. Tulsa received an automatic bid after winning the WAC Championship in late April. SMU had a strong showing all season in the region, as well as taking fourth in the WAC Championship. The two teams will head to Little Rock, Ark., and the Pleasant Valley Country Club on their way to advancing to the Championship.
In the West Region, Fresno State received the No. 4 seed, while Nevada grabbed the No. 10 seed. Fresno State has been ranked in the top 15 all season and is led by WAC Player of the Year, Nick Watney. Nevada had a great season, led by WAC Coach of the Year, Tom Duncan. The only WAC individual to make the Championship, is UTEP's Chris Baryla. Baryla is a first team all-WAC member, and was the most consistent player for the Miners. The west is going to be held at the Championship Golf Course in Albuquerque, N.M., and is being hosted by the University of New Mexico.
