SMU's women's swimming assistant coach Erica Quam has been named head women's swimming coach at Washington State. The announcement was made Tuesday.
Quam was instrumental in SMU winning five straight Western Athletic Conference Championships upon her arrival in 1997. During that time, SMU captured four WAC Swimmer of the Year awards to go along with five consecutive WAC Freshman of the Year awards.
"I have really enjoyed my time and experience here at SMU. I have had the opportunity to work with an incredible coaching staff and some of the best swimmers in the world," Quam said. "I am extremely excited to be the new Head Swim Coach at Washington State. I look forward to the opportunity to building upon the foundation of success that has already been established."
During her time on the hilltop, Quam served as the Egyptian National coach in 1999 where she coached former Mustang standout Rania Elwani en route to 10 gold medals at the Pan Arab Games.
In 2001, Quam coached 2001 WAC Freshman of the Year Georgina Lee who won two gold medals at the British Nationals, and also assisted with five Olympic and World Championship medallist.
"Erica has made many positive contributions to our program through her hard work and dedication over the past five years. I am excited that she has been chosen as the Head Coach at Washington State University," SMU head women's swimming coach Steve Collins said. "This a great opportunity to build a program at a great school in one of the most prestigious conferences in the country. I feel that Erica was a great choice to lead WSU's program and I am confident that she will be successful in building on the tradition there. I wish her all the best and am pleased to have had the opportunity to coach with her at SMU."
