STAMFORD, Conn. Two Western Athletic Conference athletes were named to the 2001-02 Verizon Academic All-America Mens Track/Cross Country Teams. SMUs Roman Oravec and Rices Adam Davis both earned first and second team honors, respectively today, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Oravec, a senior from Brno, Czech Republic, earned a 3.61 GPA in Marketing, garnering him a first-team selection to the 2001-02 team. Along with winning the 800m at the 2002 WAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships, he finished seventh in the same event at the NCAA Championships with a time of 1:46.80, helping his team to a third-place finish. Oravec has been among the nations best in the 800m, being named one of TrackWires Dandy Dozen.

Davis, a sophomore from Spring, Texas, picked up second-team honors with his 3.98 GPA in Economics and Kinesiology. Davis finished second to Oravec in the 800m at the WAC Outdoor Championship with a time of 1:49.12. He also holds the second fastest time in the WAC this season in the 800m at 1:48.48.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Verizon Academic All-America program, which was founded by CoSIDA in 1952 to recognize collegiate student-athletes for the their outstanding achievements in the classroom and on the playing field. To be eligible, an athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.20 on a scale of 4.00.
