DENVER Rice pitcher Philip Humber and first-baseman Vincent Sinisi are two of the three players selected as the nation's top freshmen by Collegiate Baseball, the newspaper announced Wednesday. Rice shortstop Paul Janish and San Jose State pitcher Matt Durkin also joined the other two on the freshmen All-American team.
Humber, from Carthage, stands 11-1 with a 2.67 earned run average this season. The right-hander won all-WAC honors and was the league's freshman of the year.
Sinisi, from The Woodlands, was also all-WAC and the league's player of the year. He enters this weekend's Super Regional series vs. Louisiana State at Reckling Park with a .438 batting average, 11 home runs and 78 runs batted in.
Janish, out of Houston and Cypress Creek High, is hitting .317 with two home runs and 30 RBI. He was also a first-team all-WAC selection.
Durkin, a local from San Jose and Willow Glen HS, was 11-3 with a 2.75 ERA. He struck out 85 batters in 98.1 innings and also had one save.

Rice, 50-12 on the season, takes on LSU (44-20)this weekend with a trip to the College World Series at stake. Friday's series opener begins at 7 pm (CDT, followed by a Saturday start at 2 pm and a Sunday first-pitch at 1 pm (if necessary). The series at Reckling Park is a sell-out.
