Scott Sandel - Boise State
Boise State University Athletics Director, Gene Bleymaier, announced this afternoon the hiring of Scott Sandel as the new head coach of the volleyball program. Sandel, who will officially take over on July 31st when he arrives in Boise, becomes the sixth head coach in the programs 32-year history of competition. Sandel replaces Fred Sturm who resigned in June for personal reasons.

Sandel inherits a program coming off its first year of membership in the Western Athletic Conference. The Broncos will be young in 2002 as they look to improve under the guidance of Sandel this season and build for the future.

Sandel brings 13 years of coaching experience to Boise State. Sandel has served as an assistant coach at two NCAA Division I programs, South Carolina and Northern Arizona, and as a head coach at the NCAA Division II level with Northern Michigan. During his coaching career he has helped guide his teams to 10 national post-season tournament appearances (nine NCAA and one NIVC) in 13 seasons, won one national championship, coached two NCAA Division II Players of the Year, six All-Americans, and nine All-Region players.

Sandel comes to the Broncos from Northern University where he guided the Wildcats
to two straight NCAA appearances. His overall record at NMU was 40-22 in two seasons.Sandel is the second head volleyball coach to be hired away from Northern Michigan University by Boise State. The other was Mark Rosen who coached the Broncos for the 1998 season before leaving for the University of Michigan.

Sandel began his collegiate coaching experience at his alma mater West Texas State University (now West Texas A&M University) in 1987. He spent four seasons (1987-1990) as an assistant with the Lady Buffaloes helping lead WTSU to a 38-1 record and the NCAA Division II title in 1990. In 1989, the Lady Buffs lost in the NCAA II Elite Eight to the eventual champions, Cal-State Bakersfield. During the 1988 campaign, West Texas advanced to the regional finals.

A native of Amarillo, Texas, Sandel graduated from West Texas A&M in 1995 with a degree in
General Studies. He played collegiate volleyball for Graceland College in Lamoni, Iowa.

Sandel, 41, is married to the former Shannon Serrurier.
