PREVIEW: FRESNO STATE - The Bulldogs recorded their 14th winning record in 15 season, finishing 7-4-1. Sophomore Ashleigh Raley leads the way for the divers, having already qualified for zones in both the 1- and 3-meter with a marks of 280.58 and 288.15, respectively. The swimming contingent is led by sophomores Carolyn Wigginton and Melissa Johnson. Johnson has placed in the top three, 22 times this season, while Wigginton recorded 18. Fresno State finished fourth at last years meet, 26 points behind third-place Rice.
HAWAII - The Rainbow Wahine finished the regular season with five dual wins. Sophomore diver Maggie Roberts grabbed second in all three diving events in last years championship. She looks to be one of the favorites, having qulified for NCAAs in both the 1- and 3-meter events. Hawaii has two new additions from last year, sophomore Yan Chen and junior YingJuan Zhen. The two combine for eight of Hawaiis top times on the season. Chens time of 1:59.83 in the 200 I.M. is the seventh best time this season in the NCAA. With five school records falling this season for the Wahine, they look to erase their sixth-place finish from a season ago.
NEVADA - The Wolf Pack picked up 10 wins on the season, moving head coach Mike Sharders school record to 31-7 in dual meets. Although Nevada finished second in 2002, they were SMUs closest competitor in their six-win run. Nevada is led by senior Ashley Clendenin, sophomore Alyssa Chin and junior Leticia Cunha. Cuhna ranks 33rd in the nation in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:03.63. The Pack has 10 swimmers and three divers that scored points in the 2002 championship returning for 2003.
RICE - The Owls look to better their third-place finish from last season, led by 2002 WAC Swimmer of the Year, Mandy Mularz. Mularz won both the 100 (49.35) and 50 (22.55) freestyle, picking up two of Rices three golds at the meet. Mularz supporting cast of junior Jackie Corcoran and sophomore Lauren Hill both lead the team this season in more than one event. Hill returns to defend her 200 breaststroke title.
SAN JOSE STATE - The Spartans are led by junior diver Tracy Harkins. Harkins, the 2002 WAC Co-Diver of the Year, comes into 2003 as the two-time defending platform champion and has also qualified for NCAAs in both the 1- and 3-meter events. Senior Charlotte Pierce has placed first in six meets this season in 100 butterfly and first in three meets in the 200 fly. The Spartans picked up one of their best finishes ever, taking sixth at the Speedo Cup.
SMU - The No. 5 Mustangs return to San Antonio looking for their seventh-straight WAC title, winning 14 golds last year. The Mustangs only dual loss this season came against No. 3 Georgia, 174-124. SMU is led by junior Georgina Lee and sophomore Flavia Rigamonti. Lee leads the Mustangs in four events this season, having picked up six golds in last seasons championship. Rigamonti returns to defend her record setting 1,650 free performance, where she shattered every WAC record with a time of 15:45.93. Junior Alenka Kejzar and senior Lisa Wanberg both return to defend golds from 2002.
