WAC SOCCER NOTEBOOK

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Holly Cohen, a senior from El Paso, Texas, helped the Miners to a 2-0 record at the Lobo adidas Classic. She tallied four goals and two assists, totaling 10 points for the tournament. She now leads the WAC with 10 points, helping the Miners to a 3-0 record on the year. record.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Kat McShane, a senior from El Paso, Texas, played center back, helping UTEP to a 6-0 shutout of Houston. It was the first shutout for the Miners since a 1-0 win over Hawai'i in 2000. McShane limited UTEP's opponents to 24 shots and just three goals.

OTHERS NOMINATED Offensive Katri Nokso-Koivisto of Fresno State had two goals in two games (one game-winner) adding an assist for five points ... Kaula Rowe of Nevada single handedly gave the Wolf Pack its first win in 21 matches, scoring both goals in a 2-0 win over Southern Utah ... Tulsas Danielle Fauteux tallied one goals and two assists for four points in a 1-0-1 weekend for the Hurricane ... Abbe Roche led the Boise State rally against Siena with a school record three assists in the game while adding the game winning goal ... Defensive Lindsay Vandenberg of Boise State had eight saves in two matches this weekend, with a 1.17 goals against average.

THIS WEEK VS. THE TOP 25 The WAC will face two teams ranked in the NSCAA top 25 this week. Fresno State (1-3) will head to Malibu, Calif. for a match up with No. 20 Pepperdine. The Bulldogs look to pick up the first WAC win against the West Coast Conference. This season the WAC is 0-2. No. 5 UCLA will head to the island of Honolulu to face Hawaii. The Pac-10 is 1-1 this season against the WAC.

NEVADA PICKS UP FIRST WIN IN 21 MATCHES The Nevada Wolf Pack knocked off Southern Utah, 2-0 at the UNLV Tournament to pick up its first win since the 2000 season. The last Nevada win came against Pacific in the final game of the 00 season winning, 2-1. Kaula Rowe scored both goals in the win.

TEAM NOTES BOISE STATE - The Broncos ended a 21-match losing streak to Idaho State, defeating the Bengals, 3-1 ... the Broncos also set a new school record for goals in the first half, scoring four against Siena ... Abbe Roche moved into a tie for first all-time on the schools career assists list with eight ... she had three last weekend.

FRESNO STATE - The Bulldogs will end its five-match season-opening road trip this weekend with a pair of California stops ... first they will face San Diego, who they are 1-2 against all-time ... in Malibu, the Bulldogs face No. 20 Pepperdine for just the second time with the Waves down in the series 0-1.

HAWAII - The Rainbow Wahine play host to No. 5 UCLA this weekend ... they return to the island where they are 1-0-1 this season.

NEVADA - The Wolf Pack picked up its first win 21 matches, as they defeated Southern Utah, 2-0 ... Kaula Rowe had both goals in the win within one minute of each other ... Nevada looks to pick up another win as host UC Riverside in the Wolf Pack Classic.

RICE - In the Owls only match of the week, they suffered a 2-1 overtime loss to Baylor ... GK Amanda Garrison leads the WAC in saves with 28 ... the Owls stay in Texas, but head to San Marcos to SW Texas State, Tuesday.

SAN JOSE STATE - The Spartans fell to 1-2 with a loss to rival San Francisco ... the Spartans have only taken seven corner kicks to its opponents 22 ... junior midfielder Mariko Yoshihora is leading the way, scoring three goals this season.

SMU - The Mustangs have now played in three consecutive overtime games - a program record ... SMU plays in its fourth-straight road match, as they will head to Norman to play Oklahoma (4-0) who they are 3-0 against ... good news for the Mustangs - GK Erin McLeod and D Sasha Andrews rejoined the team after missing the first couple weeks playing for the Canadian National Team.

UTEP - The Miners will host the annual Miner Classic at University Field ... participating teams will be Texas Tech and New Mexico ... senior Kelly Parker moved into second on the schools all-time points list with a three point effort this weekend giving her 48 all-time ... the Miners off to their best start since a 3-0 run in 1999 ... Holly Cohen and Miranda Cuthberson each turned in hat tricks, as UTEP defeated NAU, 7-3.

TULSA - The Golden Hurricane start the season off 1-2-1 for the third time in school history ... two of TUs top three scorers this season are freshman; Danielle Fauteux and Jamie German ... Tulsa does not compete again until Sunday where they will face Kansas.

A PAIR OF HAT TRICKS - In a 7-2 win over NAU, UTEP was the first WAC school this season to have an athlete earn the three-goal hat trick. Not only did they have one, they had two. Holly Cohen and Miranda Cuthberson each scored three goals against NAU on September 6, at the New Mexico Invitational.

WERE GOING INTO OVERTIME - SMU has now played in three consecutive overtime games going 1-2. The streak is a program record. The Mustangs fell to Texas A&M in double overtime, 2-1. They have come back to defeat Colorado College in double overtime, 3-2 and Arizona State in one extra period, 2-1.

SMU FAVORED TO WIN 2002 WAC CROWN Defending Western Athletic Conference soccer champion SMU has been selected in a poll by the leagues coaches to defend its 2001 crown and earn its third-straight straight regular-season championship. SMU totaled seven first-place votes and tallied 63 points to top the poll. SMU is coming off a 16-4 season in 2001 in which the Mustangs earned their third WAC tournament title and an 8-0 conference record. Head coach George Van Linder welcomes back eight starters and 14 letterwinners, including WAC Player of the Year Tara Comfort and Freshman of the Year Jill Heinemann.

CONFERENCE DOMINANCE Defending regular season champions SMU once again finished the conference season undefeated. After going 6-0-1 in the 2000 season, the Mustangs managed an 8-0 record last season. They have not lost a regular season conference match since 1999. The Mustangs are 14-0-1 over the last two seasons. Their last defeat was a 1-0 loss to San Jose State on October 17, 1999. Since that loss, the Mustangs have not fallen in 18 straight conference matches.

FACING THE NATIONS BEST Nine teams that participated in the 2001 NCAA Tournament will be opponents of WAC teams this season. National champion Santa Clara, UCLA, Denver, California, CS Fullerton, Texas A&M, Texas, Pepperdine and Kansas are all slated to face WAC teams in 2002.

WAC TOURNAMENT TO BE HELD IN HOUSTON Houston, Texas and Rice University will play host to the 2002 WAC Tournament. The championship will be played at the Rice Track/Soccer Stadium, November 7-9. Six of the WACs nine participating schools make the tournament. The format will place the No. 3 seed against the No. 6 in the opening round, while seeds, 4 and 5 will square off. The 4/5 winner will face the No. 2 seed. The 2001 Championship was held at SMU, and the Mustangs took home the crown.

WOMENS COLLEGE CUP IN AUSTIN The 2002 edition of the NCAA Womens Soccer Championship will be held at Mike A. Meyers Stadium and Soccer Field on the campus of the University of Texas, December 6 and 8. The field of 64 will begin play hosts sites, November 15.

Teams are paired based on location. The top eight teams in the 64-team pool receive a seed. Seven of the top eight seeds serve as hosts for the first and second rounds, with nine additional schools hosting games. In the third round and quarterfinals, the team with the better record will serve as host.
