OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Holly Cohen, a senior from El Paso, Texas, earned her second straight Player of the Week honor. This week, Cohen helped the Miners to another perfect weekend, winning the Miner Classic. She tallied five goals and an assist, totaling 11 points for the tournament. She now leads the WAC with 10 goals and 22 points, helping the Miners to a 5-0 record on the year. She recorded her second hat trick of the season in a 4-1 win over New Mexico. She also had two more goals, including the game winner, in a win over Texas Tech. In five games, shes already tied the schools single-season marks for goals (10) and points (22).
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Kyla Clark, a freshman from Ottawa, Ontario, went 2-0 in the net for the Miners. She recorded 19 saves in over 161 minutes with no goals allowed. She also earned her second shut out of the season, in the 3-0 win over Texas Tech in the Miner Classic.
OTHERS NOMINATED Offensive - Kortney Lewis of Fresno State had two goals in two matches adding an assist for five points ... Kelly Potysman of Rice had two goals in two matches over the weekend, giving her four points ... Hawaiis Arlene Devitt earned Outrigger Soccer Classic all-Tournament honors scoring one goal against San Francisco.
THIS WEEK VS. THE TOP 25 Only one WAC team will play any NSCAA top 25 teams this week. Fresno State (1-5) begins a three-game home stand, where they will face No. 3 UCLA on Friday, September 20, and No. 5 California the following Sunday. The WAC is 1-3 on the season against the Pac-10. The WAC is 0-4 on the season against top 25 opponents.
TEAM NOTES BOISE STATE - Broncos midfielder Brittany Zoellner scored Boise States lone goal a 1-1 draw with Portland State ... she broke two school records with the goal, moving into first place for career goals (16) and career points (37) ... this week the Broncos face a pair of Big Sky rivals in Montana and Eastern Washington.
FRESNO STATE - The Bulldogs open their home schedule this weekend against a pair of Pac-10 teams ... they will face No. 3 UCLA, who is coming off a 2-0 win over Hawaii and No. 5 California ... the two matches will be the second and third straight ranked team Fresno State has faced.
HAWAII - The Rainbow Wahine couldnt find their second win of the season, falling to San Francisco and No. 5 UCLA ... Hawaii hosts its third tournament of the season, when Long Island and Long Beach State head to the island for the OHANA Hotels and Resorts Shootout.
NEVADA - The Wolf Pack tried to pick up their second win in as many contests, but fell to Riverside in the opening match of the Wolf Pack Classic ... Nevada will also face Eastern Washington on Tuesday.
RICE - The Owls have struggled to find a W this season, earning a 3-3 tie in a double-overtime thriller to TCU ... the Owls match against North Texas was cancelled due to lightning.
SAN JOSE STATE - The Spartans have been outshot by their opponents 90-39 on the season ... of the 39 shots, 20 have been on goal, a .513 shots on goal percentage ... Mariko Yoshihara has three of the Spartans six goals this season.
SMU - Mustang head coach George Van Linder is one win away from reaching 50 wins at SMU ... last weeks 1-0 loss to Oklahoma was the Mustangs first shut out loss in 17 games (9/30/01 Stanford) ... midfielder Jennifer Martin is the lone SMU freshman to start each match this season.
UTEP - The Miners continue their winning ways, winning two more matches over the weekend ... for the second straight weekend, Holly Cohen had a hat trick, this time pulling of the feat in a 4-1 win over New Mexico ... Cohen has already tied the Miner single-season records for both goals (10) and points (22) ... UTEPs defense has allowed just 65 shots (13 spg), giving up five goals.
TULSA - Golden Hurricane goalkeeper Abby Fahrig made her first appearnace of the 2002 season against Kansas last Sunday ... Fahrig started every game last season as a freshman, posting four shutouts.
SMU, UTEP CENTRAL REGION TOP 10s UTEP, who is off to a 5-0 start, and SMU, who had managed two of its three wins in overtime, are both in SoccerBuzz Magazines Central Region Top 10. SMU is sixth, while the Miners are tied for 10th with Baylor and Kansas. Texas heads the list, just ahead of Texas A&M, who SMU fell to, 2-1, in double overtime. SMU is also fifth in the NSCAA/adidas Central Region top 10. Texas and Texas A&M head that list as well.
VAN LINDER LOOKING FOR 50 SMU head coach George Van Linder needs one more one more win to reach the 50-win mark while at SMU. Van Linders over all record is 83-44-5, but has a 49-17-2 record while with the Mustangs. This is his seventh season coaching at the Divison I level.
THREE HAT TRICKS Midfielders Holly Cohen and Miranda Cutherberson have each chalked up a hat trick this season. Cohen, who has a pair, turned her first trick in a 7-2 win over Northern Arizona in the New Mexico Invitational. Her second came at the Miner Classic against New Mexico, defeating the Lobos, 4-1. Cutherbersons also came against NAU in the 7-2 win.
NEVADA PICKS UP FIRST WIN IN 21 MATCHES The Nevada Wolf Pack knocked off Southern Utah, 2-0 at the UNLV Tournament to pick up its first win since the 2000 season. The last Nevada win came against Pacific in the final game of the 2000 season winning, 2-1. Kaula Rowe scored both goals in the win.
SMU FAVORED TO WIN 2002 WAC CROWN Defending Western Athletic Conference soccer champion SMU has been selected in a poll by the leagues coaches to defend its 2001 crown and earn its third-straight straight regular-season championship. SMU totaled seven first-place votes and tallied 63 points to top the poll. SMU is coming off a 16-4 season in 2001 in which the Mustangs earned their third WAC tournament title and an 8-0 conference record. Head coach George Van Linder welcomes back eight starters and 14 letterwinners, including WAC Player of the Year Tara Comfort and Freshman of the Year Jill Heinemann.
CONFERENCE DOMINANCE Defending regular season champions SMU once again finished the conference season undefeated. After going 6-0-1 in the 2000 season, the Mustangs managed an 8-0 record last season. They have not lost a regular season conference match since 1999. The Mustangs are 14-0-1 over the last two seasons. Their last defeat was a 1-0 loss to San Jose State on October 17, 1999. Since that loss, the Mustangs have not fallen in 18 straight conference matches.
RETURNING ALL-WAC PLAYERS Of the 24 first and second-team all-WAC players in 2001, 13 return for the 2002 season. SMUs Tara Comfort, last seasons WAC Player of the Year heads the six SMU returners. There are six first-team selections and seven second-teamers on this years rosters. Hawaii and SMU are the only two teams with first-team members returning.
FACING THE NATIONS BEST Nine teams that participated in the 2001 NCAA Tournament are opponents of WAC teams this season. National champion Santa Clara, UCLA, Denver, California, CS Fullerton, Texas A&M, Texas, Pepperdine and Kansas are all slated to face WAC teams in 2002.
WAC TOURNAMENT TO BE HELD IN HOUSTON Houston, Texas and Rice University will play host to the 2002 WAC Tournament. The championship will be played at the Rice Track/Soccer Stadium, November 7-9. Six of the WACs nine participating schools make the tournament. The format will place the No. 3 seed against the No. 6 in the opening round, while seeds, 4 and 5 will square off. The 4/5 winner will face the No. 2 seed. The 2001 Championship was held at SMU, and the Mustangs took home the crown.
WOMENS COLLEGE CUP IN AUSTIN The 2002 edition of the NCAA Womens Soccer Championship will be held at Mike A. Meyers Stadium and Soccer Field on the campus of the University of Texas, December 6 and 8. The field of 64 will begin play hosts sites, November 15.
Teams are paired based on location. The top eight teams in the 64-team pool receive a seed. Seven of the top eight seeds serve as hosts for the first and second rounds, with nine additional schools hosting games. In the third round and quarterfinals, the team with the better record will serve as host.
