ATHLETES OF THE WEEK MEN - Basir Ibrahim, a senior from Columbus, Ohio, took sixth in the 8k at the Lobo Invitational with a time of 24:41. He helped the Miners to a third place finish out of 12 teams. Host New Mexico won the titile.
WOMEN - Emma Garrard, a junior from Anchorage, Alaska, took first in the 5k at the Fresno State Invitational. Her time of 17:59 was the first time she had broken 18 minutes in that event.

Fresno State hosted the Fresno State Invite ... the men finished third, while the women took seventh ... the men were led by junior Fernando Cabada who took seventh in the 8k event ... junior Kara June once again headlined for the lady Bulldogs with a personal-best time of 18:19 in the 5k, landing her third.
Hawaii, behind the legs of Jennifer Crumley, finished fourth at the Hilo Invite ... Crumley took sixth with a personal-best time of 19:37 in the 5k.
Nevada headed west to the Fresno State Invite, where Emma Garrards first place finish, helped the Wolf Pack earn its first top spot of the season ... Garrards time of 17:59 in the 5k event won the race by 11 seconds, her first sub 18 minute performance in that event.
Rice hosted the the Rice Invite in Houston, where the men and women finished third and second, respectively ... Adam Davis was again the Owls top finisher as he took fifth in the 6k run in a time of 18:35 ... for the women, Summer Bell was Rices top performer, landing her best showing, placing fourth, with a time of 14:14 in the 4,100 meters.

San Jose State men and women attended the San Fracisco Invite; the men tying for third and the women taking second ... Jesse McLeod had his best collegiate finish, grabbing fourth in the four-mile run in a time of 21:23 ... Ashleigh Nebeker again led the Spartans, taking fourth in the 2.8 mile, finishing with a time of 17:10.
SMU headed to Denton, Texas for the North Texas Invite where the men took second and the women grabbed first ... the men were led by Amos Skinner and Abraham Ekal who finished third and fourth in the four-mile event ... 2001 WAC freshman of the Year Karin van Rooyen won the womens side, crossing at 10:50 in the two-mile ... she finished ahead of teammate Rika Feuth, who was second with a time of 11:09.

WAC CHAMPIONSHIP TO BE HELD IN DALLAS Dallas, Texas and SMU will play host to the 2002 WAC Championships. The event will take place on Saturday, November 2. The Rice men and Tulsa women will both look to defend their titles from the 2001 Championship held in Hawaii.
