OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Natasha Kai, a freshman from Kahuku, Hawaii, tallied three goals in two games at the OHANA Hotels and Resorts No Kai Oi Tournament. Against UAB, Kai had the game-tying goal in a 1-1 match with just 10 minutes left remaining. She also netted two more goals against Wyoming in 5-2 Rainbow Wahine win. She 13 shots against the Cowgirls to set a new school record.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Erin Lavey, a freshman from Pleasanton, Calif., earned a shutout in her first career NCAA start. Lavey, who earned a .67 goals against average in 135:00 of play, allowing one goal in relief in a 4-0 loss to Loyola Marymount, but pitched a shutout against UC Riverside, winning 3-0.

OTHERS NOIMINATED Offensive Mariko Yoshihara of San Jose State scored two goals in the Spartans first win of the season. Miranda Cuthberson of UTEP scored the game winning goal in the Miners 2-1 win over SW Texas State. SMUs Lauren Mussallem earned five points scoring twice with one assist as the Mustangs went 1-1 with a loss 2-1 (2OT) loss to No. 5 Texas A&M... Defensive Megan Tarpenning of Nevada had 18 saves, earning a .96 GAA in her first two games this season. UTEPs Kyla Clark recorded her first collegiate victory against SW Texas State.

THIS WEEK VS. THE TOP 25 There are no Western Athletic Conference games scheduled against NSCAA/adidas top 25 teams this week.

TEAM NOTES
BOISE STATE - Sophomore transfer BreeAnn Milligan led the Bronco effort with the lone goal scored in a 2-1, season-opening loss to archrival Idaho. The Broncos head to Pocatello, Idaho for the Bengal Classic.

FRESNO STATE - The Bulldogs suffered a pair of losses on their trip to Colorado. They now head to Las Vegas for the UNLV Tournament, where they will square off with Southern Utah and UNLV.

HAWAII - The Rainbow Wahine finished runners-up at the OHANA Hotels and Resorts No Kai Oi, tying with UAB and defeating Wyoming. They landed four on the all-tournament team; Sasha Araya-Schrander, Joelle Sugai, Natasha Kai and Arlene Devitt. Devitt became the schools all-time points leader with her two goals vs. Wyoming, giving her 50 points in 33 career matches.

NEVADA - The Wolf Pack return their top player, Kaula Rowe, who has led the team in goals scored and points the past two seasons. The Wolf Pack suffered its first overtime loss of this season, after falling four times in the extra period in 2001.

RICE - The Owls opened their second Division I season, falling to No. 5 Texas A&M. After a second loss to in city rival Houston, 2-1, the Owls come home to face fellow Texan, Baylor.

SAN JOSE STATE - The Spartans picked up its first win in six tries, dating back to an overtime win vs. Nevada, defeating UC Riverside 3-0. Mariko Yoshihara had her first multi-goal match, notching two against UCR.

SMU - The Mustangs began the 2002 season, alot like they finshed the 01. SMU faced No. 5 Texas A&M as they did in the 2001 NCAA Tournament, falling in both matches, 2-1 in overtime. SMU played its first two matches without first-team all-WAC member GK Erin McLeod and defender Sasha Andrews. They are currently competing with Canadas National soccer team, but will return for matches this week.

UTEP - The Miners are now 6-1 in home openers, defeating SW Texas State, 2-1. Kelly Parker scored her 17th career goal, placing her second the schools all-time list and moves her into a tie with former Miner Laura Glasspoole with 45 points.

TULSA - The Golden Hurricane started five freshmen against Oklahoma and six against Oklahoma State this past weekend at the Oklahoma Shootout. Tulsa starts the season off 0-2 for the first time since the 1991 season and marks the second time in the 16-year history of the program.

SMU FAVORED TO WIN 2002 WAC CROWN Defending Western Athletic Conference soccer champion SMU has been selected in a poll by the leagues coaches to defend its 2001 crown and earn its third-straight straight regular-season championship. SMU totaled seven first-place votes and tallied 63 points to top the poll. SMU is coming off a 16-4 season in 2001 in which the Mustangs earned their third WAC tournament title and an 8-0 conference record. Head coach George Van Linder welcomes back eight starters and 14 letterwinners, including WAC Player of the Year Tara Comfort and Freshman of the Year Jill Heinemann.

CONFERENCE DOMINANCE Defending regular season champions SMU once again finished the conference season undefeated. After going 6-0-1 in the 2000 season, the Mustangs managed an 8-0 record last season. They have not lost a regular season conference match since 1999. The Mustangs are 14-0-1 over the last two seasons. Their last defeat was a 1-0 loss to San Jose State on October 17, 1999. Since that loss, the Mustangs have not fallen in 18 straight conference matches.

FACING THE NATIONS BEST Nine teams that participated in the 2001 NCAA Tournament will be opponents of WAC teams this season. National champion Santa Clara, UCLA, Denver, California, CS Fullerton, Texas A&M, Texas, Pepperdine and Kansas are all slated to face WAC teams in 2002.

WAC TOURNAMENT TO BE HELD IN HOUSTON Houston, Texas and Rice University will play host to the 2002 WAC Tournament. The championship will be played at the Rice Track/Soccer Stadium, November 7-9. Six of the WACs nine participating schools make the tournament. The format will place the No. 3 seed against the No. 6 in the opening round, while seeds, 4 and 5 will square off. The 4/5 winner will face the No. 2 seed. The 2001 Championship was held at SMU, and the Mustangs took home the crown.

WOMENS COLLEGE CUP IN AUSTIN The 2002 edition of the NCAA Womens Soccer Championship will be held at Mike A. Meyers Stadium and Soccer Field on the campus of the University of Texas, December 6 and 8. The field of 64 will begin play hosts sites, November 15.

Teams are paired based on location. The top eight teams in the 64-team pool receive a seed. Seven of the top eight seeds serve as hosts for the first and second rounds, with nine additional schools hosting games. In the third round and quarterfinals, the team with the better record will serve as host.
