ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
MEN - Andy Norman, a native of Stockport, England, grabbed first at the Hurricane Cross Country Festival in Tulsa Okla., with a time of 19:44 over the four-mile course. Norman helped the Hurricane to defend its title from last season. He was also one of six Hurricane to place in the top 10.

WOMEN - Tami Scott, a freshman from Amhest Junction, Wisc., was the top finisher for the Hurricane, placing fifth in the two-mile event in a time of 11:22. She topped teammate Sarah Haskins by two seconds.

OTHERS NOMINATED Men - Bashar Ibrahim, UTEP; Matt Heard, San Jose State.
Women - Ashleigh Nebeker, San Jose State

NOTES FROM THE COURSE - The Tulsa men finished first, while women grabbed second at the Hurricane Harriers Open. The men were led by six top-10 finishers, including Andy Normans gold and Owain Matthews silver. For the women, Tami Scott finished fifth to lead the Hurricane.

UTEP headed down I-10 to Santa Teresa, N.M. for the Lori Fitzgerald Open, where the men placed second; there was no scoring for the women. 2001 WAC Champion Bashar Ibrahim led the Miners taking second in 6.8k race, two seconds off the lead pace. Jessica Angerstein was the highest Lady Miner at 16th.

Both the SJSU men and women finished in the top 10 at CS Fullerton. The Spartan women were led by Ashleigh Nebeker, as they grabbed eighth. Matt Heard was the top finisher for San Jose State on the mens side.

Fresno State unofficially began its season with the 37th Watermelon Run. Fernando Cabada, a transfer from Arkansas, was the first Bulldog to cross the finish line with a time of 19:30. For the women, Kara June grabbed first out of 145 runners in the two mile.

The Woodlands played host to the Rice Relays. Adam Davis led the Owls, placing sixth in the 5,000m, while Katie Waite finished 12th for the women.

WAC CHAMPIONSHIP TO BE HELD IN DALLAS Dallas, Texas and SMU will play host to the 2002 WAC Championships. The event will take place on Saturday, November 2. The Rice men and Tulsa women will both look to defend their titles from the 2001 Championship held in Hawaii.
