SMU IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT - The SMU Mustangs won their second-straight WAC Tournament, November 9, giving them the WAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

First Round -
Lady Mustangs Upset #11 Texas, 2-1 - SMU experienced a bit of deja vu' Nov. 15, in beating 11th-ranked Texas, 2-1, in the first round of the 2002 NCAA Tournament in College Station. In fact, the same thing took place last year when SMU defeated the Longhorns in first round play in College Station. With the victory, SMU improved to 13-5-4. The Aggies defeated Northwestern State Friday by the score of 8-0.

Second Round -
Lady Mustangs Fall to #3 Texas A&M in Penalty Kick Shootout, 3-2 - The SMU women's soccer team's season came to a screeching halt Nov. 17 in College Station as third-ranked Texas A&M took SMU to the penalty kick phase after a 1-1 score and 110 minutes of play. After connecting on their first two PK's, the Mustangs could not get the next three shots past Aggie goalkeeper Kati Jo Spisak, giving Texas A&M the right to advance to the NCAA Tournament round of 16 by the score of 3-2 in the penalty kicks. As a result, SMU closes out its season with a record of 13-6-4 while the Aggies improve to 18-4-2.

2002 WAC TOURNAMENT -
Championship

SMU vs. UTEP - Top seeded SMU won its second WAC title in as many seasons, defeating second-seeded UTEP, 3-1. Laura Mussalem scored the game-winning goal with 21 minutes left in the match. Miner midfielder Kate Stevens received a red card at the 53 minute mark, leaving UTEP down a man for the rest of the match. SMU took the advantage, taking a 2-1 lead off the Mussallem goal, unassisted. With the goal, the Mustangs kept the momentum and the game.

Semifinals
Fresno State vs. SMU - Top-seeded SMU landed in its ninth overtime match of the season, defeating fifth-seeded Fresno State, 2-1, in double overtime to advance to its fourth WAC Championship Match. First team all-WAC midfielder, Jill Heinemann, scored in the 107th minute, giving the Mustangs the win.

UTEP vs. Rice - Second-seeded UTEP advanced to its first ever WAC Championship match, defeating sixth-seeded Rice, 6-2, in the 2002 WAC Championship semifinals. Seniors Miranda Cuthbertson and Holly Cohen combined for five goals.

Quarterfinals
Fresno State vs. Tulsa - Leading the charge for fifth-seeded Fresno State was the freshman tandem of Katri Nokso-Koivisto and Kortney Lewis, who both notched two goals in the 4-0 win for the Bulldogs. Fresno State matched its highest scoring output of the season.

Rice vs. Hawai`i - Rice earn its third-straight win knocking off Hawai`i, 2-0. The Owls, who won their last two regular season games to get into the tournament, relied on two goals from sophomore defender Caitlin Curry.

SMU's VAN LINDER HEADS TO BAYLOR - WAC's 2002 Coach of the Year, George Van Linder, will head to Baylor to the head coach of the Bears women's soccer team.

At SMU, Van Linder led the Lady Mustangs to four-straight conference championships and three NCAA Tournament appearances. Under Van Linder, SMU finished in the top 25 three times and compiled a four-year mark of 59-21-10 (.711) and a conference record of 24-3-2 (.862).

In 2002, Van Linder took the Lady Mustangs to a 13-6-4 record and to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, as well as a WAC championship. SMU finished with a No. 20 national ranking by NSCAA.

Van Linder was named the 2000 WAC coach of the year and in 1999 led SMU to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament and a No. 17 national ranking.

SAN JOSE STATE'S GRIMES RETIRES - San Jose State head women's soccer coach Tamie Grimes has resigned, effective December 31, to pursue family interests.

Grimes was the first coach to lead a Spartan women's soccer team to the NCAA Tournament. She was the interim coach for the 2000 Spartan team and led them to the 2000 Western Athletic Conference tournament title and the program's first NCAA Tournament bid. Her three-year career record was 18-37-7 at San Jose State. Prior to being named interim coach, Grimes was a Spartan assistant coach for two seasons.

WAC NCAA MARKS - Both UTEP and SMU notched marks in the NCAA record book this season with their outstanding seasons.

UTEP became the WAC's first NCAA Annual Champion, posting a 4.42 goals per game average. The mark is third best among annual leaders. At 4.42 gpg, the Miners also rank 12th on the NCAA single-season list. UTEP also finished second in the NCAA with a 10.5 games improved mark. With a 3-11-2 record in 2001, the Miners posted a 16-3 record in 2002, good for a 10.5 game turnaround. The mark is also tied for fourth best ever in the NCAA with SMU (1995).

UTEP's Kelly Parker became just the 17th player in NCAA history to log at least one assist per game, finishing the season at 1.00 apg. The mark is also the best in the NCAA for 2002.

SMU lost its first WAC game since 1999, falling to Tulsa on October 25, 2002, 2-1. The unbeaten streak lasted for 20 games, starting with a win over TCU, October 20, 1999. The mark of 20 unbeaten conference games is tied for the 17th best streak in history.

WAC NCAA LEADERS - UTEP is in the top 10 in three NCAA categories. The Miners lead the nation, averaging 4.42 goals per match, scoring 84 goals on the season, 17 higher than the next team. UTEP's 0.842 winning percentage is eighth in the country. Hawai`i finished 30th in the nation with its 2.45 goals per match.

UTEP's Holly Cohen is fourth in the nation in points per match (2.83), while fellow Miners Miranda Cuthbertson (2.53) and Kelly Parker (2.16) are seventh and tied for 13th, respectively. Hawai`i's Natasha Kai is 12th with 2.18 per contest. Cohen is also sixth in goals per match (1.22), while Cuthbertson is eighth (1.05) and Kai is 13th (0.94). Parker led the nation in assists per contest with 1.00 apg. Nevada's Megan Tarpenning finished 17th in the country in saves per match with 7.21.

UTEP'S COHEN NAMED FIRST-TEAM ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICAN - UTEP senior Holly Cohen has been named to the first team 2002 Verizon Academic All-America Women's Soccer University Division Team. Cohen, a Criminal Justice major with a 3.75 grade point average, led the Miners to the best season in school history as they posted a 16-3 record. Cohen was the team's leading scorer with a school-record 22 goals and 51 points. She also recorded seven assists.

2002 NSCAA ALL-CENTRAL REGION TEAM - The National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) named seven WAC soccer players to the 2002 all-Central team. Forward Tara Comfort of SMU was named to the first team. Goalkeeper Erin McLeod and defender Diana Kelm of SMU and forward Holly Cohen of UTEP were all named to the region's second team. On the third team are defender Sasha Andrews of SMU, midfielder Kelly Parker of UTEP and forward Danielle Fauteux of Tulsa.

REGULAR SEASON CHAMPION - SMU earned its second-straight regular season WAC crown as the Mustangs defeated UTEP, 3-1, in Dallas. SMU improved to 10-5-4 (6-1-1 WAC) and entered the WAC Tournament as the top seed. UTEP snaped a three-game winning streak and falls to 15-2 overall (6-2 WAC).

2002 WAC TEAM RECORD SETTERS - There were many single-season and conference-season records broken in 2002. With the offensive power UTEP showed throughout the season, they brke many records. As a team, UTEP had 30 assists in conference play, a new WAC record. Hawai`i had 20 in 2001. The Miners 73 assists are a new record, surpassing the mark of 72 held by BYU in 1996. UTEP earned 86 points in WAC play, passing SMU's 2001 mark of 70, a new WAC-season record. The Miners 241 points all season were 10 shy of the season mark set by BYU in `96.

2002 WAC INDIVIDUAL RECORD SETTERS - UTEP's Kelly Parker was the single-season assist leader, with a 19 assists in 2002, passing BYU's Jennifer Love who had 12 in 1996. In WAC play, Lauren Mussallem of SMU and Erin Quattromani of Hawai`i each had seven assists, a new WAC-play record. Miranda Cuthbertson and Kaleita Roberts both assisted on four goals in a 10-1 win over Boise State (10/6), tying them with former Miner Jennifer Biondi, who posted four against Troy State in 1997, for most all-time in a single match. The mark is best in a conference match. Freshman Natasha Kai had 23 points in WAC play, breaking the record held by Kim Harvey of SMU, who had 20 in 2001. Kai posted 10 goals in WAC play, passing the mark of nine also set by Harvey in `01. Kai also had 14 shots in the Wahine win over Long Island (9/19). The 14 shots are a new WAC single-match record. The record was formerly held by Stacie Savage of San Jose State, when she had 12 against Wyoming in 1997. Nevada's Megan Tarpenning had 137 saves on the season, tying her with Amanda Smith (1998) of UTEP.

END OF THE DOMINANCE - SMU was handed its first WAC loss since falling, 1-0, to San Jose State in 1999, when the Mustangs were defeated by Tulsa, 2-1 (Oct. 25). The defending regular season champions finished the 2001 conference season undefeated. After going 6-0-1 in the 2000 season, the Mustangs managed an 8-0 record last season. They had not lost a regular season conference match since 1999. The Mustangs were 8-0-2 over the last two seasons. Before the loss, the Mustangs had not fallen in 20-straight conference matches.

2002 HAT TRICKS - WAC competitors turned in 13 total three-goal hat tricks this season. There was one all of last season (Arlene Devitt, UH). UTEP, and its high-scoring offense had seven on the season; three by Holly Cohen, two from Miranda Cuthbertson and one each from Kelly Parker and Kate Stevens. Tulsa freshman Danielle Fauteux notched three, while Hawai`i's Natasha Kai posted two and SMU's Kim Harvey had one.

SMU IN CENTRAL REGION TOP 10 - After starting the season with a No. 6 ranking, SMU finishes in the NSCAA Central Region Top 10 at No. 7. The Mustangs finished the 2002 season fifth in SoccerBuzz Magazine's Central Region, while UTEP received votes. Texas A&M topped both polls.

RECORD SETTING OVERTIMES - SMU put in a bit of extra work this season, going into overtime a season record 10 times. Although the record shows a loss with No. 3 Texas A&M, the Mustangs fell, 3-2 in penalty kicks, advancing the Aggies to round of 16 in the NCAA Tournament. SMU squeezed out a, 2-1, win against Fresno State in double overtime, advancing to the WAC Championship match. It was the Mustangs ninth overtime match of the year. SMU's 1-1 tie with North Texas (10/23), was its eighth, extra-period match this season. SMU had a 2-2 draw with San Jose State (10/13). Along with North Texas and the Spartan match, SMU tied with TCU (10/2) in its sixth extra-period match of the season. The Mustangs are currently 2-2-3 in those affairs. SMU tied with Loyola Marymount on Sept. 27, 0-0. Along with the three draws, the Mustangs fell to Vanderbilt and Texas A&M, in double-overtime. The Lady Mustangs defeated Colorado College 3-2 in double OT, as well as knocking off Arizona State in one extra period, 2-1. SMU had five overtimes in a season three times before (1996, `99 and `00).

UTEP RECORD BREAKERS - Senior Holly Cohen set UTEP's single-season records for goals (22) and points (51). Fellow senior Kelly Parker also set a single-season mark for a Miner, assisting on 19 goals. Along with her assists, she had 11 goals on the season for 41 points. She is also the new career leader in assists with 29. Miranda Cuthbertson earned 48 points on the season. The three are now the top three single-season points leaders in UTEP history.
