ATHLETE OF THE WEEK Alyssa Chin, a sophomore from LaCanada, Calif., earned her second WAC Athlete of the Week honor of the season, picking up the title for the week October 28. Chin swam in six of the 10 events in the UC Irvine Sprint meet, winning four, helping the Wolf Pack win both the Sprint and Relay meets. She won the 100-yard backstroke (58.34), 200-yard IM (2:07.52), 100-yard free (52.88) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:05.42). Chin also placed second in the 200-yard free (1:53.33) and sixth in the 50-yard free (24.63).
OTHERS NOMINATED Charlotte Pierce of San Jose State earned a season-best time of 24.32 in the 50 Free, placing her second. She also earned a first-place finish in the 200 Fly in 2:06.30. Pierce helped the Spartan 400 Medley Relay team to a gold with at time of 3:52.96.
TEAM NOTES FRESNO STATE - The Bulldogs recorded a pair of wins over the weekend, defeating San Diego 126-11, and UC Irvine 158.5-141.5. Junior Kristi Collins swam a career best in the 200 Fly with a time of 2:07.73 versus San Diego.They tallied 12 top-three finishes in the meet. Sophomore Carolyn Wiggington established a new meet record against UC Irvine with a time of 57.65 in the 100 Back. The Bulldogs notched 22 top-three finishers in the meet.
HAWAII - The Rainbow Wahine earned a split this past weekend, defeating New Hampshire, 81-50, but falling to Wisconsin, 96-34. Hawaii will host San Diego State January 17, then Washington January 25 to conlude their January calendar.
NEVADA - Nevada hosts the Pac-10s Washington State this weekend. On January 17 the teams will compete in relays, with the individual races to follow on the 18th.
RICE - The Owls will travel to College Station, Texas, for a dual with Big 12 member Texas A&M and the SECs LSU.
SAN JOSE STATE - The Spartans suffered a loss in their only meet in January, falling to Santa Barbara, 117-69. Senior Charlotte Pierce swam a season best in the 50 Free, posting a time of 24.32. She won the 200 Fly in 2:06.30. Kiley Reinke won the 200 Breast with a time of 2:2343.
SMU - The No. 7 Mustangs begin a string of three home meets, starting with Georgia, Jan. 18. The Bulldogs are ranked third nationally in the Dec. 10 CSCAA poll. SMU will host Rice and Houston January 24 and 25, respectivley t o conclude their home season.
WAC CHAMPIONSHIP TO BE HELD IN SAN ANTONIO The 2002 WAC Tournament will in San Antonio, Texas at the Palo Alto College Natatorium, February 26-March 1. SMU won the 2003 crown, landing its sixth title in as many years.
SMU IN THE TOP 25 The SMU Mustangs began the 2002-03 season ranked ninth in the nation, after finishing ninth in the 2001-02 NCAA Championships. SMU has moved to seventh in the Dec. 10 poll. The Mustangs face the bulk of their schedule in January, beginning with a dual against No. 3 Georgia in Jan. 18.
FRESNO STATE HIRES INTERIM HEAD COACH Former Fresno State water polo coach Tom Milich has been hired as the interim head coach of the Fresno State women's swimming and diving team. For the past 10 years, Milich has been the head coach of the Clovis Swim Club and the Aquatics Director of Clovis Unified School District. Under his tutelage, five swimmers have gone on to represent the United States in international competition while seven have competed at the NCAA Division I championships.
RIGAMONTI BREAKS U.S. OPEN RECORD SMU sophomore swimmer Flavia Rigamonti capped off a successful night for the No. 5 SMU women's swimming & diving team Nov. 22 at the 2002 FINA World Cup in Long Island, N.Y. by setting a new U.S. Open record in the 800 short course meter free event with a time of 8:17.20. Rigamonti's time broke the old mark of 8:17.32 set over 20 years ago on January 8, 1982. Rigamonti's U.S. Open record was one of six U.S. Open records that fell Friday night, including three American records and one world record.
