ATHLETE OF THE WEEK Leticia Cuhna, a junior from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, swam on three winning relays in the relay meet against Washington State; the 200-yard I.M., 300-yard backstroke and 300-yard breaststroke. In the dual competition with the Cougars, Cuhna captured the 100-yard breaststroke and was a member of Nevadas winning 200-yard medley relay team. Her time of 1:04.74 in the 100 breaststroke is the top time by a Wolf Pack swimmer this season in that event.

OTHERS NOMINATED Jessica Affleck of Hawaii won the 1,000 free in 10:07.38 and the 500 free in 4:58.74 in a dual meet with San Diego State. Her time in the 500 is the fastest this season for the Rainbow Wahine.


TEAM NOTES
FRESNO STATE - The Bulldogs will compete in their final regular season road dual meet of the year at Oregon State. The diving squad will not compete at the meet. With a victory, the Bulldogs can eclipse last season's dual meet win mark of six and stay on pace to match the 2000-01 team's total of nine. OSU has won its last six dual meets including victories over Utah (148-134) and BYU (131-106) two weeks ago. Last season, the Beavers outlasted the Bulldogs 151-143 in Fresno. Last week at the UCLA Diving Invitational, sophomore Ashleigh Raley finished fourth in the 1-meter diving competition. Raley tallied an overall score of 459.85 between the finals and preliminary sessions.

HAWAII - The Rainbow Wahine defeated San Diego State by a score of 148-88 at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatics Complex. The women improved to 5-10 this season in dual meets. Long distance swimmer Jessica Affleck, a freshman from Australia, displayed fantastic stamina as she captured the first place finish in both the 1000 and 500 Free. Affleck flew to finish the 1000 Free at 10:07.38 and the 500 free at 4:58.57, earning the fastest Wahine time of the season. UH's final home dual meet of the season in next Saturday, Jan. 25, as the Rainbow Wahine host the 22nd-ranked Washington Huskies at DKAC at noon.

NEVADA - The Wolf Pack improved to 8-1 on the season with a pair of wins over Washington State, at Lombardi Pool in Reno, Nev. Nevada earned a, 112-92, victory in the relay dual and a, 133-124, win in the dual compeititon. The losses dropped the Cougars to 3-3 on the year. The Wolf Pack dominated winning all five relay events in the meet. Nevada also won the first nine events and exhibitioned out of the last seven to account for the close score. Nevada will host instate rival UNLV next Saturday, Jan. 25.

RICE - The Owls were back in action for the first time in more than a month, falling to both No. 23 Texas A&M (175-90) and LSU (154-107) in a double dual meet at the Student Rec Center Natatorium. Rice's next dual meet is on the road at WAC foe and sixth-ranked SMU on Friday, Jan. 24 at 7 p.m. in Dallas.

SAN JOSE STATE - Spartan diver Tracy Harkins finished in the top-10 in the 1-meter finals and the platform at the UCLA Diving Invitational this past weekend. Harkins finished fifth in the platform with a 323.10 score. She was 10th in the 1-meter finals with a 413.45 score. The Spartans next competition is against WAC rival Nevada, Feb. 1 in Reno.

SMU - The No. 6 Mustangs lost their first dual meet of the season to No. 3 Georgia, 174-124, at Perkins Natatorium in Dallas. Georgia won 12 of 16 events competed in. One of SMU's four wins was Flavia Rigamonti's pool record time of 4:44.35 in the 500 free. Georgia broke pool records in the 200 fly, 100 breast and 200 free relay on the afternoon. SMU will next be in action Friday, Jan. 24 when they host Rice at 7:00 p.m. The meet will take place at Perkins Natatorium.

WAC CHAMPIONSHIP TO BE HELD IN SAN ANTONIO The 2002 WAC Tournament will in San Antonio, Texas at the Palo Alto College Natatorium, February 26-March 1. SMU won the 2003 crown, landing its sixth title in as many years.

SMU IN THE TOP 25 The SMU Mustangs began the 2002-03 season ranked ninth in the nation, after finishing ninth in the 2001-02 NCAA Championships. SMU is currently ranked sixth nationally.

FRESNO STATE HIRES INTERIM HEAD COACH Former Fresno State water polo coach Tom Milich has been hired as the interim head coach of the Fresno State women's swimming and diving team. For the past 10 years, Milich has been the head coach of the Clovis Swim Club and the Aquatics Director of Clovis Unified School District. Under his tutelage, five swimmers have gone on to represent the United States in international competition while seven have competed at the NCAA Division I championships.

RIGAMONTI BREAKS U.S. OPEN RECORD SMU sophomore swimmer Flavia Rigamonti capped off a successful night for the No. 5 SMU women's swimming & diving team Nov. 22 at the 2002 FINA World Cup in Long Island, N.Y. by setting a new U.S. Open record in the 800 short course meter free event with a time of 8:17.20. Rigamonti's time broke the old mark of 8:17.32 set over 20 years ago on January 8, 1982. Rigamonti's U.S. Open record was one of six U.S. Open records that fell Friday night, including three American records and one world record.
