ATHLETE OF THE WEEK - The Western Athletic Conference will announce its first athlete of the week on Monday, Jan. 27.
NOTES FROM AROUND THE LEAGUE Boise State - The Broncos open play Feb. 2 in Salt Lake City where they will face Utah. Senior Renate Stoop is ranked 73rd by the ITA in its first spring poll.
Fresno State - The 26th ranked Bulldogs open their season against Cal Poly Jan. 26 at the Wathen Tennis Center. Fresno State is coming off a 17-6 season that saw them reach the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the third year in a row. The Bulldogs duo of Chloe Carlotti and Lucia Tallo are ranked 33rd by the ITA in doubles to begin the spring season. Sophomore Carlotti is also 27th in singles.
Hawaii - The Rainbow Wahine began dual competition in November, suffering a loss to No. 1 Stanford, 7-0. Like there men, Hawaii begins a two-week west-coast swing beginning with a match at Washington State.
Louisiana Tech - The Lady Techsters stay in state for their first match of the season, taking on LSU in Baton Rouge.
SMU - The Mustangs begin a six-match home stand starting with WAC foe UTEP and Centenary, Jan. 27. SMU began the season ranked 65th by the ITA. Sophomore Jenny Langer is ranked 100th by the ITA in singles.
UTEP - The Miners begin the 2003 season with a three-day Texas swing beginning Jan. 25. UTEP first heads to Denton to take on North Texas, then to Arlington for UT-Arlington and will conlcude in Dallas with a WAC match against SMU. The Miners return home for four straight.
Tulsa - The Golden Hurricanes first scheduled match of the season was cancelled with Hampton. Tulsa will take on SW MIssouri State in Tulsa Jan. 26. The Hurricane boast the highest ranked WAC player in Alicia Pillay, who landed 20th in the first ITA poll of 2003.
ITA RANKINGS - Fresno State begins the 2003 season ranked 26th in the nation, earning 1,149 points. Boise State lands 53rd with 552 points, while Tulsa is just behind them at 56th. SMU rounds out WAC teams in the top 75 at No. 65.
The Fresno State duo of Chloe Carlotti and Lucia Tallo start off the 2003 season ranked 33rd in the country.
Tulsas Alicia Pillay begins the 2003 season ranked in the top 25, coming in 20th. Carlotti, who advanced to the round of 16 in the 2002 NCAA Tournament, is ranked 27th.
WAC TOURNAMENT TO BE HELD IN BOISE This season, the Western Athletic Conference Tournament will be held in Boise, Idaho at the Appleton Tennis Courts on the campus of Boise State, April 25-27. The 2002 champion Fresno State Bulldogs will look to defend their title.
