ATHLETE OF THE WEEK - Aleksandra Durska, a senior from Pobiedziska, Poland, helped the Golden Hurricane defeat SW Missouri State, 4-3, winning at the No. 2 singles and No.1 doubles spot. She defeated SMSs Cassandra Godfrey, 6-0, 6-0, in singles play, and paired up with Alicia Pillay to defeat Ia Zozrashvili and Godfrey, 8-2.


NOTES FROM AROUND THE LEAGUE
Boise State - The Broncos open play Feb. 2 in Salt Lake City where they will face Utah. Senior Renate Stoop is ranked 73rd by the ITA in its first spring poll.

Fresno State - The 26th ranked Bulldogs hit the road for the first time this season when it will take on top-ranked Stanford. The Cardinal have never lost to Fresno State (13-0). Fresno State is coming off a home win over Cal Poly, 5-2, picking up singles wins from No. 27 Chloe Carlotti, Vlatka Jovanovic, Lucia Tallo and Katherin Winterhalter.

Hawaii - The Rainbow Wahine began the dual season in Novomber, falling to No. 1 Stanford, 7-0. They return to action on Feb. 7 against Washington State. Hawaii begins a six-match west-coast road swing in Pullman.

Louisiana Tech - The Lady Techsters stayed in state for their first match of the season, falling to LSU, 7-0. They head home to Ruston for the weekend, taking on Louisiana-Monroe and Sam Houston.

Nevada - The Wolf Pack open the 2003 season at the Las Vegas Tournament. Nevada will square off with Weber State, New Mexico State and UNLV, respectively, Jan. 31-Feb. 2.

Rice - The Owls begin dual play Feb. 1 with a four-match homestand beginning with Texas A&M Corpus Christi and SW Texas State. On Feb. 5, Rice hosts No. 23 Texas A&M and Louisiana-Lafayette.

SMU - The Mustangs began their season in dominating fashion, starting 4-0. SMU has lost only one point in those four matches (23-1). The Ponies defeated WAC foe UTEP during that run, 7-0. They continue to play at home, facing Texas-Arlington and Houston this weekend.

UTEP - The Miners suffered two losses in their season-opening Texas swing, falling to North Texas, 5-2, and SMU, 7-0. The match scheduled with Texas-Arlington was cancelled due to freezing weather. UTEP begins a four-match homestand beginning with New Mexico and Texas-San Antonio this week.

Tulsa - The Golden Hurricane have only had one match on the season, a 4-3 win over SW Missouri State. Tulsa travels to Nashville, Tenn., for matches with Vanderbilt and Iowa.

ITA RANKINGS - Fresno State begins the 2003 season ranked 26th in the nation, earning 1,149 points. Boise State lands 53rd with 552 points, while Tulsa is just behind them at 56th. SMU rounds out WAC teams in the top 75 at No. 65.

The Fresno State duo of Chloe Carlotti and Lucia Tallo start off the 2003 season ranked 33rd in the country.

Tulsas Alicia Pillay begins the 2003 season ranked in the top 25, coming in 20th. Carlotti, who advanced to the round of 16 in the 2002 NCAA Tournament, is ranked 27th.

WAC TOURNAMENT TO BE HELD IN BOISE This season, the Western Athletic Conference Tournament will be held in Boise, Idaho at the Appleton Tennis Courts on the campus of Boise State, April 25-27. The 2002 champion Fresno State Bulldogs will look to defend their title.
