WAC PLAYER OF THE MONTH Fresno States Hector Almada has been named Septembers Western Athletic Conference mens tennis player of the month.

Almada, Fresno States No. 1 singles player the past two years, went 2-1 in singles and 2-0 in doubles at the Polo Tennis Collegiate Tournament in Tulsa, Okla. In one of his singles wins, the 76th-ranked Almada defeated No. 74 Antonio Ruiz of Texas. In doubles, Almada teamed with Sergiu Modoc to win twice. The pair is currently ranked sixth in the nation.

OTHERS NOMINATED Boise State's Thomas Schoeck advanced to the championship of the HEB Baylor Invitational. He also went 2-1 in doubles with partner Guillaume Bouvier in the same tournament ... Nevadas Rudi Leuschner advanced to the semifinals of the Pacific Fall Invitational to start the season 2-1 Tulsas Shunsuke Shimizu finished the month 4-2 in singles play, while gathering 2-3 mark in doubles.

WAC TOURNAMENT TO BE HELD IN HOUSTON This season, the Western Athletic Conference Tournament will be held in Houston, Texas at Jake Hess Tennis Stadium on the campus of Rice University, April 30-May 2. The 2003 champion, Boise State, will look to defend its title.

QUALIFYING BEGINS AT ITA ALL-AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIPS The Icy Hot/ITA Mens All-American Championships, the first of three national championship events during the 2003-04 collegiate tennis season, begins in Chattanooga October 9-12 at The Champions Club.

This year's event is being hosted for the second-straight year at The Champions Club and sponsored by Chattem, Inc., a Chattanooga pharmaceutical firm that has chosen its Icy Hot product, a dual action topical pain reliever, as title sponsor. The Greater Chattanooga Sports and Events Committee administers the event. Rice, Tulsa, SMU, Boise State and Fresno State have all had atheltes competiting in either the single or double competitions.

AMONG THE NATIONS BEST Two WAC doubles team start the 2003 season ranked in the top 10. Richard and William Barker from Rice once again are ranked No. 1 in the nation. The Barker brothers were the ITAs Doubles Team of the Year last season. Fresno States Hector Almada and Sergui Modoc are ranked No. 6 to start the season. In singles, the highest ranked WAC player is 14th ranked Robert Searle, the 2003 WAC Freshman of the Year.
