PLAYERS OF THE WEEKCo-OffensiveKim Harvey, a senior from Garland, Texas, scored all four of SMUs goals over two conference matches. The Mustangs defeated Rice, 1-0, and knocked off Tulsa, 3-2. While collecting her third hat trick of the season, Harvey now has seven game-winning goals this year. The four goals gives her 10 in conference play. Harvey is now third on SMUs career list for goals (58) and points (135).
Natasha Kai, a sophomore from Kahuku, Hawaii, tallied 10 points over two conference matches, scoring all five goals the Rainbow Wahine registered. Hawaii picked up a, 4-1, win over Nevada and a, 1-0, win over Boise State, both on the road. Her game-winning goals were her fourth and fifth of the season. She now has 21 goals on the season, giving her 37 goals in 31 career matches.
DefensiveKrystalynn Ontai, a junior from Miliani, Hawaii, anchored a defense that posted back-to-back road wins against Nevada (4-1) and Boise State (1-0). She helped limit Nevada to just three shots, while Boise State only registered five and was held scoreless. It is the eighth shutout this season for the Wahine, the fourth in conference play.

THIS WEEK IN THE WAC - There are three weeks remaining in conference play before the WAC Championship, Nov. 6-8 in Dallas. SMU (5-0), the lone undefeated team in the WAC, looks for Kim Harvey to continue her record-breaking play, as the Mustangs host UTEP (3-2) and freshman Christine McCartney. Hawaii (5-1), who is holding strong at second place in conference, plays host to both Fresno State (3-2), who is coming off a, 7-1, win over San Jose State and play the Spartans at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. UTEP will step out of conference a match up with instate rival, Texas Tech Oct. 19. Rice (2-2), who looks to separate itself from the field, and Tulsa, who looks to get its first win in 10 tries, will both host Boise State (1-2) and Nevada (0-3) over the weekend.
WAC VS. THE TOP 25/NATION - The Western Athletic Conference is 0-11 against the NSCAA/adidas top 25 this season. Against the rest of the nations, the WAC is 34-45-6 (.435), with a few more non-conference matches to be played. As a conference, the teams have their best records against the Southland, posting a 6-1-1 record and the Big Sky with a 5-3-1 record.
HARVEY, KAI, MCCARTNEY AMONG NATIONS BEST - Hawaiis Natasha Kai, SMUs Kim Harvey and UTEP freshman Christine McCartney are among the best in the nation in both goals and points this season. Harvey, a senior, is tied for first in the country in points with 46, sharing the spot with Kai. Kai leads the nation in goals with 21, with Harvey just behind her, ranking third with 19. In points per game, Kai and Harvey are second (3.29) with McCartney 16th at 2.09. Kai has a slight edge in goals per game at 1.50, placing her second, while Harvey is fourth (1.36) and McCartney is 11th (1.00). Harvey, Kai and McCartney have combined for seven hat tricks on the season. Kai had one of the NCAAs best single-game performances when she tallied five goals and 11 points against on Sept. 14 against Morehead State. UTEPs 12 goals against Prairie View A&M was the second best output in the NCAA this season.
HARVEY SETS NEW WAC SEASON RECORDS; RACE WITH KAI FOR TOP SCORER - Kim Harvey, a native of Garland, Texas, set the new WAC play, points record. With her four goals over the past weekend, Harvey now has 24 points, topping Hawaiis Natasha Kai, who posted 23 in 2002. Kai, a sophomore forward, is also on pace to top her old mark, but currently sits four points behind Harvey. Harvey has 10 goals through five WAC matches, tying her with Kais record setting 10-goal performance in 2002. Kai again is right on her heals, posting nine goals through six matches. The pair each have a hat trick during conference play and combine for six throughout the entire 2003 season.
CLARK ONE WIN SHY OF WAC RECORD - Amanda Clark, a native of Londonberry, Vt., posted a win in each of her first five WAC matches this season, leaving her one shy of the six needed to tie the conference mark. SMUs Erin McLeod and Becca Leif both tallied six wins in 2001 and 2000, respectively, to share the record. SMU still has three conference matches.
KAI TIES CONFERENCE RECORD - Natasha Kai, Hawaiis sophomore forward, posted five goals against Morehead State (9/14). She tied the mark set by Ashlee Richmond of TCU in 1996 against McNeese State. Kai also tallied one assist, giving her 11 points for the match. She also posted a hat trick against Utah Valley State, giving her eight goals for the two Wahine matches ... Kai continues to dominate her opponents, tying the conference single-game record with goals against Nevada (10/10). She registered four goals to tie UTEPs Miranda Cutherbertson and Kaletia Roberts, who each tallied four goals in the 2002 season.
HARVEY REACHING CAREER MARKS - Kim Harvey currently ranks in the top 10 in four of the WACs career offensive categories. The senior is second all-time in the WAC in both shots with 262, and goals at 58. She also has 134 points throughout her career, landing her second behind Shauna Rohbuck of BYU (216). Harvey has eight assists on the season, moving her career total to 19, good for a tie for 10th.
1-0, AGAIN - The Rice Owls have competed in 13 matches this season, battling to scores of 1-0, nine times. Rice has gone 4-5 in those matches. The schedule also includes a 1-1 tie, and two 2-0 losses. Goalkeeper Lauren Shockley is currently posting a season goals against average of 0.97, tops in the conference. The Owls started off the season 0-4-1, but have come on late to win five of seven, four of those, 1-0 wins.
TOPPING THE 250 MARK - SMU eclipsed the 250-win mark for the program since its inception in 1986 on Sept. 19 with a 2-1 win over Colorado College.
AROUND THE WACBoise State has its final road trip of the regular season this week as it takes on Tulsa and Rice in WAC action. The Broncos are coming off a split last weekend at home where they defeated Utah Valley State, 3-2, in overtime on Oct. 10 before dropping a hard fought match 0-1 to Hawaii in the 86th minute.
Fresno State, winners of three straight, plays its final road match of the season this weekend. The team will be logging some miles in the process, as the Bulldogs head to Honolulu for a critical WAC contest against Hawaii on Oct. 17. The Rainbow Wahine currently stand in second place in the conference standings. Hawaii is on a bit of a roll itself, having won three consecutive matches after being edged 4-3 by SMU back on Oct. 3. Fresno State, which has never won in Honolulu, can extend its winning streak to four with a victory and strengthen its chances for a berth in the 2003 WAC Tournament next month.
Hawaii returns to the island, where they will face Fresno State, the leagues leader in shots, and San Jose State. The Wahine (5-1 WAC) currently rank second in the WAC, and post a three-game winning streak, with their only loss coming at the hands top ranked SMU, 4-3. Natasha Kai posted her third hat trick of the season in a four-goal effort against Nevada. Kai needs just one goal to reach her record-setting 10 WAC goals in 2002. Hawaii has won five WAC matches this season, four of them by way of shutout.
Senior Kaula Rowe, Nevadas all-time leading goal scorer, netted her first goal of the season against Hawaii. Rowes goal also snapped a two-match scoreless streak for the Wolf Pack. Freshman Kristin Anderson added her second assist of the year on Oct. 10 against the Rainbow Wahine. Anderson leads the team in assists (2) and goals (3). After beginning the year 2-1, Nevada has dropped nine straight matches.
Rice midfielder Angela Furin took only one shot all week, but her 30-foot attempt Oct. 12 at UTEP was a good one. Her first goal of the season was a winner and the games lone score in the 1-0 WAC road win. Junior goalkeeper Lauren Shockley recorded her WAC co-leading fourth shutout of the season at UTEP. The overtime win was the longest complete game shutout by a goalkeeper in Rice soccer history (95:37 minutes). She lowered her WAC-leading goals-against average to 0.77 for all games and to an austere 0.74 in league competition. Rice improved its conference record to 2-2 and surpassed last seasons win total (4) by moving to 5-7-1 overall. With five regular season games and the WAC Tournament remaining on the schedule, Rice has a chance to set the school record for wins and post the first-ever winning record in the young three-year history of the program.
San Jose States Heather Dickinson scored her first goal of the season on a penalty kick in the second half of the Fresno State match. It is the first penalty kick for the Spartans since Marie McCann in the 2001 season. The 34 shots allowed were the most by an opponent this season since 31 the allowed against Santa Clara. The 19 shots on goal allowed were the most by a Spartan opponent this season.
SMU has won its last seven games and its last nine WAC regular season games dating back to the 2002 season. The Mustangs currently sport a 45-4-3 WAC record (regular season), dating back to SMUs first year in the WAC. The last time SMU posted a better record than its current 12-2 record (after 14 games) was in 1995 when the Mustangs were 13-0-1 after 14 games and finished the season 23-1-1, reaching the final four. As a team, the Mustangs are shooting a 52.8 shot-on-goal percentage. SMU posts an 8-0 series record vs. UTEP, out scoring the Miners, 20-4.
UTEP scored four second-half goals to come back and defeat Tulsa, 4-1, picking up its third conference win. The Miners got out of the gates quickly in the second period with Kate Stevens scoring at the 47:16 mark on passes from Kaletia Roberts and Kia Sams. A little over a minute later freshman Christine McCartney added her team-leading 11th goal. On Oct. 12, Rices Angela Furin scored a goal in the 96th minute as the Owls topped UTEP, 1-0 in overtime at University Field. The two squads played even for the first 90 minutes. Both teams took 11 shots in regulation. The Miners had three scoring opportunities in the overtime period with shots coming from Stevens, Sams and Roberts.
Tulsa played one of its best games of the season against SMU last weekend at home. Although, TU is mired in a school-record nine match losing streak, a pair of freshmen stepped up and scored two goals to lead Tulsa back from a 2-0 deficit against the Mustangs. Krista Barker tallied her first collegiate goal, while Katie Ward scored her second goal on the year to tie the game at 2-2 with 30 minutes left to play.
SMU FAVORED TO WIN 2003 CROWN - SMU is coming off a 13-6-4 season in 2002 that saw the Mustangs fall just short of the NCAA Round of 16, losing to Texas A&M in the penalty kick session at the NCAA Tournament. The Mustangs are returning seven starters including junior defender Amanda Jordan, a 2002 first team all-WAC selection. Kim Harvey, a second-team member also returns for her senior season. The Mustangs will enter the 2003 season under the helm of new head coach John Cossaboon, the former head coach of San Diego. He replaces George Van Linder who ran the Mustang program for four years before leaving for Baylor.
