DENVER Fresno States Hector Almada has been named Septembers Western Athletic Conference mens tennis player of the month.
Almada, Fresno States No. 1 singles player the past two years, went 2-1 in singles and 2-0 in doubles at the Polo Tennis Collegiate Tournament in Tulsa, Okla. In one of his singles wins, the 76th-ranked Almada defeated No. 74 Antonio Ruiz of Texas. In doubles, Almada teamed with Sergiu Modoc to win twice. The pair is currently ranked sixth in the nation.
OTHERS NOMINATED Boise State's Thomas Schoeck advanced to the championship of the HEB Baylor Invitational. He also went 2-1 in doubles with partner Guillaume Bouvier in the same tournament ... Nevadas Rudi Leuschner advanced to the semifinals of the Pacific Fall Invitational to start the season 2-1 Tulsas Shunsuke Shimizu finished the month 4-2 in singles play, while gathering 2-3 mark in doubles.
