RENO, Nev. - University of Nevada head women's soccer coach Dang Pibulvech's contract will not be renewed for the 2004 season, it was announced Monday by Associate Athletics Director Cindy Fox.
Pibulvech was hired as the program's first head coach in December of 1999. In four seasons at the helm of the Wolf Pack program, Pibulvech posted an overall record of 12-58-2 and a Western Athletic Conference mark of 2-27-2.
"To say that I am disappointed with the decision would be an understatement, yet I am thankful for the privilege and opportunities the university and athletic department have given me the past four years," said Pibulvech. "Unfortunately, a situation such as this is the norm in this profession. No different from the expectations and standards that I have set on my athletes, I am accountable for the results and progress of this program."
Second-year assistant coach Matt Paton will be retained as an assistant coach. A national search to find Pibulvech's replacement will begin immediately.
"We appreciate Dang's efforts and value the hard work it took to start a new program, however, at this time we felt we should be more competitive, particularly within the WAC," said Fox. "Building a competitive Division I soccer program is very difficult, but you need to see improvement each year. The team is not on the competitive level that we felt we should be at after four years."
