DENVER Fresno States Kathrin Winterhalter has been named Octobers Western Athletic Conference womens tennis player of the month.
Winterhalter, a sophomore from Clovis, Calif., reached the semifinals of the Saint Mary's Invitational and the round of 16 at the ITA Northwest Regionals. Winterhalter had her best success in doubles. Along with partner Lucia Sainz, she captured the doubles crown at the Saint Mary's Invitational. She also advanced to the quarterfinals in doubles at the ITA Regionals. This season, Winterhalter has won 10 of 11 doubles matches and has notched two tournament victories.
OTHERS NOMINATED Hawaiis Lauren Fitzgerald went 4-1 in singles play at the ITA Western Regional Tournament in San Diego. She also was 1-1 in doubles play with partner Paige Mainor, advancing to the third round in the back draw of the tournament Louisiana Techs Saharai Uriarte went 3-4 in singles play during October and 3-2 in doubles play with partner Avril Martinez. She teamed with Martinez to take first place in the doubles D Flight at the Cougar Fall Classic Rices Tracie Chong was one of three Owls to advance to the quarterfinals of the ITA Southwest Regional Championships, winning four-straight matches. She went 1-1 at the ITA All-American Championships, qualifying for the singles draw ... Tulsas Daniela Muscolino posted a 4-2 singles record in October, and owns a 6-3 mark for the fall season. At the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships, Muscolino advanced to the qualifying round of the prequalifying tournament, defeating Dukes Tory Aawacki, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, and Washingtons Dinka Hadzic, 6-2, 6-2.
