DENVER San Jose State center Eric Walton has been named the Western Athletic Conference mens basketball player of the week for December 8-14.
Walton, a senior from Pensacola, Fla. (Ventura College), scored a career-high 27 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the Spartans 85-77 overtime win against Cal State Sacramento on Saturday. Walton was 10-of-18 from the field and 7-of-7 from the free throw line. After averaging just 5.5 points and 3.3 rebounds a year ago, Walton leads the Spartans with 14.2 points and 9.3 rebounds per game this season. The victory pulled San Jose State to .500 (3-3) for the first time since Dec. 10, 2002. It was Waltons first ever WAC Player of the Week award and first for a Spartan player this year.
The other nominations were senior guard Bryan Defares, Boise State; senior guard/forward Renaldo Major, Fresno State; freshman forward/center Paul Millsap, Louisiana Tech; freshman forward Nick Fazekas, Nevada; senior guard Chris Craig, UTEP; and junior forward Jarius Glenn, Tulsa.
