ATHLETE OF THE WEEK - Alicia Pillay, a senior from Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, posted a 2-1 record from both the singles and doubles No. 1 positions at the USTA/ITA Team Indoor Championships in Madison, Wis. Pillay, the nations 20th-ranked player defeated Floridas Lindsay Dawaf, the nations seventh-ranked player, 6-3, 6-3. She also defeated Karin Coetzee, 6-3, 6-7, 6-3, helping the Golden Hurricane to a, 4-3, upset-win over 28th-ranked Wake Forest. In doubles play, Pillay paired up with Aleksandra Durska, knocking off the seventh-ranked duo of Alexis Gordon and Julia Scaringe of Florida, 8-3.
OTHERS NOMINATED - Jemima Hayward of Boise State went a combined 3-0 from the No.1 and No. 2 singles spots, helping the Broncos to a 3-0 week ... Kathrin Winterhalter of Fresno State won her match at the No. 5 singles spot to help lift the 23rd-ranked Bulldogs over the 15th -ranked UNLV, 6-1. Winterhalter also teamed with Chloe Carlotti for an 8-1 at the No. 2 doubles ... Lauren Archer of Rice went 2-1 in singles matches this weekend, pushing her season singles record to 4-1. She has also teamed up with Blair DiSesa for a 4-1 doubles record.
?NOTES FROM AROUND THE LEAGUE Boise State - The Broncos continued their dominating play, winning each dual match this season, 7-0. Boise State hosts conference foe Hawaii, Feb. 11 before hosting the Boise State Classic, Feb. 14.
Fresno State - The 23rd ranked Bulldogs picked up an early season upset, knocking off No. 17 UNLV, 6-1. Fresno State will leave the confines of the Wathen Tennis Center and head east to Moblie, Ala., for a match with Mississippi, Feb. 15 and South Alabama, Feb. 16. They will return home to face No. 9 UCLA, Feb. 18.
Hawaii - Through three matches of a six-match road swing, the Rainbow Wahine are 1-2 (1-3 on the season). UH picked up a, 4-3, win over Idaho. They continue the road trip in Boise, where they will face the Broncos, before concluding the trip against Whitman College and Gonzaga.
Louisiana Tech - The Lady Techsters evened up their season mark at 2-2 suffering a 6-1 loss to Houston. They return home this weekend for a double header on Feb. 16, facing North Texas and Centenary.
Nevada - After opening the season 0-2, the Wolf Pack are off until Feb. 22 when they head to California for matches with San Francisco and Rice in Palo Alto.
Rice - The Owls dropped a its first two matches of the sesaon, falling, 6-1 to Arkansas and, 4-3 to Oklahoma State. Rice returns home for a double-dip with Texas-San Antonio and Tulsa, Feb. 15.
SMU - The Mustangs join Boise State as the only undefeated WAC team at 8-0, picking wins over, Texas-Arlington, SW Texas State and Sam Houston State. The Mustangs have allowed only one point this season, winning 4-1 against Centenary.
UTEP - The Miners picked up their first win of the season, defeating Texas-Pan American, 6-1. UTEPs match with Tennessee Tech was cancelled, leaving the Miners with a 1-3 record on the season.
Tulsa - The Golden Hurricane traveled to Madison, Wis., for the USTA/ITA Team Indoors, facing some of the nations best competition. Tulsa drew the nations No. 2 team, Florida, falling 6-1. Alicia Pillay picked up the lone point, knocking off the seventh-ranked player in the nation, 6-3, 6-3. Fairing no better, the Hurricane faced off with No. 11 Tennessee, losing, 7-0. Tulsa ended the tournament on a high note, upsetting No. 28 Wake Forest, 4-3.
ITA RANKINGS - Fresno State is currently ranked 17th in the nation, the highest WAC team. Boise State is 58th, while Tulsa is just ahead of them at 42th. SMU rounds out WAC teams in the top 75 at No. 68.
The Fresno State duo of Chloe Carlotti and Lucia Tallo is ranked 33rd in the country.
Tulsas Alicia Pillay is ranked in the top 25, coming in 20th. Carlotti, who advanced to the round of 16 in the 2002 NCAA Tournament, is ranked 27th.
WAC TOURNAMENT TO BE HELD IN BOISE This season, the Western Athletic Conference Tournament will be held in Boise, Idaho at the Appleton Tennis Courts on the campus of Boise State, April 25-27. The 2002 champion Fresno State Bulldogs will look to defend their title.
