ATHLETE OF THE WEEKErin Polowski, a junior from Boise, Idaho, went 3-0 on the week for the Broncos, knocking off her opponents from Hawaii, New Mexico and Washington State from the No. 4 position. She was the Broncos only singles player to win against Washington State. Polowski and doubles partner, Jemima Hayward, went 2-1 from the No. 1doubles spot. The only loss for the pair came against New Mexicos Maja Kvacek and Tjasa Suvak, 8-6.
OTHERS NOMINATED - Blair DiSesa of Rice defeated Tulanes Jenny Kuhn, 6-1, 4-6, 6-2, improving her record to 4-2 in the spring ... Coral Silverstone of San Jose State won at the No. 2 singles spot, helping the Spartans to their first win of the season, defeating Grossmont College, 7-0. She picked another win, 7-5, 7-5, against St. Marys Kate Harden in a 6-1, Spartan loss ... Daniela Muscolino of Tulsa picked up wins in both her singles and doubles spot in a 4-3 loss to Oklahoma. She won 6-2, 6-3, from the No. 4 singles, and won 8-6 in doubles with her partner, Marina Barrios.
NOTES FROM AROUND THE LEAGUE Boise State - The Broncos picked up a WAC win, defeating Hawaii, 7-0. The Broncos also hosted the Boise State Classic, going 1-1. They picked up a win against New Mexico, 4-3, but fell to Washington State, 5-2. Boise State has the weekend off before heading to Colorado for three matches.
Fresno State - The 17th ranked Bulldogs suffered their second loss of the season, falling to 19th-ranked South Alabama, 5-2. All-American Chloe Carlotti remains perfect on the season at 5-0. Fresno State picked up a win against Mississippi, keeping them above .500, at 3-2 on the season. They conclude a three-match road swing, with No. 9 UCLA, Feb. 18.
Hawaii - The Rainbow Wahine fell to Boise State in their first WAC match of the season, 7-0.
Hawaii finished a five-match road trip with a 7-0 win over Whitman College. The Rainbow Wahine return home for a pair of matches, beginning with No. 25 San Diego State, Feb. 21.
Louisiana Tech - The Lady Techsters had their only two matches of the week cancelled due to rain. They face a pair of in state rivals, Southeastern Louisiana and McNeese State.
Nevada - After opening the season 0-2, the Wolf Pack are off until Feb. 22 when they head to California for matches with San Francisco and Rice in Palo Alto.
Rice - The Owls have a tough four day, four match California trip. Starting Feb. 20, Rice has matches with No. 5 Stanford, Pacific, No. 17 Fresno State and Nevada (in Stanford).
SMU - The Mustangs dropped their first match of the season, falling to Arkansas, 4-3. With an 8-1 record, SMU takes the momentum into Louisiana where they will face Tulane and LSU on consecutive days.
UTEP - The Miners head west on I-10 for a match with New Mexico State, then return home for a pair of matches, hosting Hampton and Northern Arizona.
Tulsa - The Golden Hurricane suffered a loss in their only match of the week, falling 4-3 to Arkansas. Tulsa makes a trip to southern Louisiana, where they take on LSU and Tulane.
ITA RANKINGS - Fresno State is currently ranked 17th in the nation, the highest WAC team. Boise State is 58th, while Tulsa is just ahead of them at 42th. SMU rounds out WAC teams in the top 75 at No. 68.
The Fresno State duo of Chloe Carlotti and Lucia Tallo is ranked 33rd in the country.
Tulsas Alicia Pillay is ranked in the top 25, coming in 20th. Carlotti, who advanced to the round of 16 in the 2002 NCAA Tournament, is ranked 27th.
WAC TOURNAMENT TO BE HELD IN BOISE This season, the Western Athletic Conference Tournament will be held in Boise, Idaho at the Appleton Tennis Courts on the campus of Boise State, April 25-27. The 2002 champion Fresno State Bulldogs will look to defend their title.
