DENVER Fresno State outfielder Tory Davis and Rice right-handed pitcher Jeff Niemann have been named the Western Athletic Conference Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for February 17-23.
Davis, a junior from Roseville, Calif. (Yuba CC), was 3-for-6 in two games against San Francisco last week. Davis hit a three-run homer in Fresno States 6-5 win on Saturday and then added a two-run home run in Sundays 9-7 victory. He also had a total of seven RBIs in the two games.
It is Davis first ever WAC Player of the Week award.
Niemann, a sophomore from Houston, Texas (Lamar HS), helped Rice shut out two ranked opponents last week. He pitched 2.2 innings in relief to earn his first career save in a 3-0 win at 20th-ranked Houston and then went 7.0 innings to improve to 2-0 on the year in a 6-0 win over No. 25 Mississippi. He allowed only three hits and two walks in the two games and struck out nine batters.
It is Niemanns first ever WAC Pitcher of the Week award.
Other player of the week nominations included: senior outfielder Brent Cook, Hawaii; senior shortstop Wade Robinson, Louisiana Tech; sophomore first baseman Vincent Sinisi, Rice; and junior third baseman Kevin Frandsen, San Jose State.
Additional pitcher of the week nominations included: senior Chris George, Hawaii; senior Adam Kirkendall, Louisiana Tech; and freshman Matt Winck, San Jose State.
