DENVER Nevadas Cindy Elkins and Hawaiis Melissa Coogan have been named the Western Athletic Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively. Both are earning their first player of the week honors.
Elkins, a freshman from Reno, Nev., (Wooster) earned the Wolf Packs second honor of the season with pitcher Judith van Kampen earning pitcher of the week honors earlier this season. Elkins led the Wolf Pack to a 4-1 week at the Troy Cox Invitational, earning all-tournament honors. Nevada improved to 7-3 after the strong week.
The freshman ended the three-day tournament with 14 total bases and five runs scored. She had eight hits in five games, batting .615. In a 12-7 win over IUPU-Fort Wayne, Elkins went 3-for-3 with a home run, a double and two RBI. Against Illinois-Chicago, she went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI.
Coogan, a sophomore from West Hills, Calif. (El Camino Real), allowed only three earned runs for the Rainbow Wahine, as Hawaii went 4-2 on the week. Coogan went 4-0, including winning both ends of a doubleheader at Loyola Marymount. She shut out the Lions 2-0 in the second game of that twin bill. She ended the week with a 0.72 ERA with 12 strikeouts. She threw in 5-of-6 Rainbow Wahine games last week. She also earned wins against Southern Utah and UC Riverside.
