ATHLETE OF THE WEEKSvetlana Kouzmenko, a freshman from Minsk, Belaruse, went 2-0 from the No. 3 singles spot, improving her dual record to 8-0. Along with doubles partner Kit Carson, knocked off the No. 1 doubles team in the nation, defeating Tulanes Julie Smekodub and Jenny Kuhn, 9-7.
OTHERS NOMINATED - Chloe Carlotti of Fresno State won both her singles matches, moving her dual record to 7-0, 16-5 overall. The Bulldogs fell to No. 9 UCLA, 4-3, but picked up a conference win, defeating Rice, 5-2 ... Lauren Archer of Rice went 3-1 over the Owls four day, four match stretch, dropping her only match against No. 5 Stanford. Archer is now 7-3 in dual competition ... Alicia Pillay of Tulsa posted a 3-0 record for the Hurricane, helping them to wins over Arkansas and LSU. She also racked up two doubles wins.
NOTES FROM AROUND THE LEAGUE Boise State - The Broncos were off this past weekend, before they travel to Colorado Springs for two matches. Boise State will square off with Colorado State and host Air Force, before heading north to Denver for a match with DU. With a 6-1 record, the Broncos .857 winning percentage tops the WAC.
Fresno State - The 17th ranked Bulldogs play host to the Cougars of BYU at the Wathen Tennis Center, Mar. 3. Chloe Carlotti remains undefeated at 7-0, picking up wins against No. 9 UCLA and Rice. At 4-3, the Bulldogs only losses came to No. 5 Stanford, No. 19 South Alabama and No. 9 UCLA.
Hawaii - The Rainbow Wahine fell to 3-6, suffering losses to San Diego State, 6-1, and Santa Clara, 4-3. Hawaii takes to road again, this for a three-match swing battling CS Riverside, CS Northridge and UC Irvine, Mar. 7-9.
Louisiana Tech - The Lady Techsters dropped their third straight, falling to Southeastern Louisiana and McNeese State. La Tech is off this weekend, before they travel to face Birmingham Southern and Samford.
Nevada - The Wolf Pack fell to 0-4 on the season, suffering a conference loss to Rice, 7-0. Nevada looks for its first win as it travels to San Diego for matches with Temple and SMU.
Rice - The Owls return home after a four match stretch in California where they went, 2-2. Rice picked up wins over Nevada (7-0) and Pacific (6-1), but fell to No. 17 Fresno State (5-2) and No. 5 Stanford (7-0). The Owls host UTEP and Florida State, Mar. 1-2.
San Jose State - The Spartans fell to UC Riverside, 5-2, and No. 18 UNLV, 7-0, moving their season record to 1-7. San Jose State is off until March 4, when they travel to San Francisco for a match with USF.
SMU - The Mustangs look to get back on the winning track, having lost three in row after opening the season with eight wins. SMU is home this weekend taking on Virginia Commonwealth. In the loss to Tulane, Svetlana Kouzmenko, along with doubles partner Kit Carson, knocked off the No. 1 doubles team in the nation, defeating Julie Smekodub and Jenny Kuhn, 9-7.
UTEP - The Miners picked up a split last weekend, falling to Hampton, 4-3, but defeating Northern Arizona, 5-2. UTEP will travel west on I-10 to take on New Mexico State before heading to Houston, for matches with Houston and Rice.
Tulsa - The Golden Hurricane evened their record up at 5-5, picking up a 4-3 win over LSU, but falling to Tulsa, 5-2. In its only match this weekend, they will face Virginia Commonwealth.
ITA RANKINGS - Fresno State is currently ranked 17th in the nation, the highest WAC team. Boise State is 59th, while Tulsa is just ahead of them at 50th. SMU rounds out WAC teams in the top 75 at No. 71.
The Fresno State duo of Chloe Carlotti and Lucia Tallo is ranked 33rd in the country.
Tulsas Alicia Pillay is ranked in the top 25, coming in 20th. Carlotti, who advanced to the round of 16 in the 2002 NCAA Tournament, is ranked 27th.
WAC TOURNAMENT TO BE HELD IN BOISE This season, the Western Athletic Conference Tournament will be held in Boise, Idaho at the Appleton Tennis Courts on the campus of Boise State, April 25-27. The 2002 champion Fresno State Bulldogs will look to defend their title.
