ATHLETE OF THE WEEK Lisa Wanberg, a senior from Malmo, Sweden, had a standout weekend at the Texas Quad Meet in Austin, Texas. Joining the fifth-ranked Mustangs, were No. 6 Arizona, No. 14 Arizona State and host, No. 8 Texas. Wanberg earned two runner-up finishes in both the 100 (50.61) and 200 (1:49.47) yard freestyle. Her time of 23.65 in the 50 free was good for fourth in the highly contested event. She was SMUs opening leg of its 400 free relay that took second, and was also a member of the third-place 200 free relay team.

OTHERS NOMINATED Sarabeth Schweitzer of Nevada helped the Wolf Pack to a conference win over San Jose State, winning the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:06.44. She also placed second in the 200-yard fly and swam the final leg of the 400-yard medley relay team which took first ... Charlotte Pierce of San Jose State won both the 200 fly (2:08.72) and the 100 fly (57.50) in a loss to Nevada. She was a member of the first-place 200 freestyle relay team (1:39.98) and the the runner-up 400 medley relay team (3:58.29).


TEAM NOTES
FRESNO STATE - The Bulldogs will play host to San Jose State in the regular season finale Feb. 8. Prior to the meet, Fresno State will honor its two seniors, Jessica Klenner and Bethany Starkweather. Last season, the Spartans defeated the Bulldogs 171-129. The Bulldogs will also be looking to snap a two-meet losing streak. Paced by wins in the last five swimming events, San Diego State outlasted Fresno State 160-138. The Aztecs won nine of the meet's 16 events.

HAWAII - The Rainbow Wahine fell to the Washington Huskies, 112-166, in their the final dual meet of the season, at Duke Kahanamoku Aquatics Complex. The competition was fierce as Hawaii faced the Huskies for the second time this season. The Wahine finish dual meets with a record of 5-11. The Wahine will participate in the Senior Circuit, which is slated for Feb. 7. The meet begins at 6 p.m. at Duke Kahanamoku Aquatics Complex.

NEVADA - The Wolf Pack closed out the regular season with a 163-119 dual meet win over San Jose State on Feb. 1 at Lombardi Pool in Reno, Nev. Nevada finished the regular season winning a conference-high nine meets. Next up for the Pack is the WAC Championship in San Antonio, beginning Feb. 26.

RICE - The Owls extended their win streak over crosstown-rival Houston to 12-straight on Jan. 31, taking first place in 10 of 11 events to hand the Cougars a 140-62 loss at Rice Pool. Rice, who is 8-5 on the season, will close its dual-meet season out with a trip to Austin to take on the eighth-ranked Longhorns Saturday, Feb. 8 at 1 pm.

SAN JOSE STATE - Senior Charlotte Pierce was the only Spartan swimmer to win two individual races, but the San Jose State womens swimming team fell to host Nevada 163-119. Pierce continued her winning ways this season by winning the 100 butterfly in a time of 57.50, and the 200 butterfly in 2:08.72. She was also a member of the second place 400 medley relay team that finished in 3:58.29, and the 200 freestyle relay team that placed first in 1:39.98.The Spartans finish their regular season at Fresno State before the WAC Championship in San Antonio.

SMU - The No. 5 Mustangs defeated both No. 6 Arizona (187-165) and No. 14 Arizona State (232-120) at the Texas Quad Meet in Austin, Texas. The Mustangs fell to No. 8 Texas, 221-131. With the two wins and one loss, SMU improves to 8-2 on the year and will next be in action Feb. 26-Mar. 1 when they compete in the WAC Championships in San Antonio, Texas. SMU will be looking for its seventh-straight conference title.

WAC CHAMPIONSHIP TO BE HELD IN SAN ANTONIO The 2002 WAC Tournament will in San Antonio, Texas at the Palo Alto College Natatorium, February 26-March 1. SMU won the 2003 crown, landing its sixth title in as many years.

SMU IN THE TOP 25 The SMU Mustangs began the 2002-03 season ranked ninth in the nation, after finishing ninth in the 2001-02 NCAA Championships. SMU is currently ranked fifth nationally and is the only WAC team in the polls.

FRESNO STATE HIRES INTERIM HEAD COACH Former Fresno State water polo coach Tom Milich has been hired as the interim head coach of the Fresno State women's swimming and diving team. For the past 10 years, Milich has been the head coach of the Clovis Swim Club and the Aquatics Director of Clovis Unified School District. Under his tutelage, five swimmers have gone on to represent the United States in international competition while seven have competed at the NCAA Division I championships.

RIGAMONTI BREAKS U.S. OPEN RECORD SMU sophomore swimmer Flavia Rigamonti capped off a successful night for the No. 5 SMU women's swimming & diving team Nov. 22 at the 2002 FINA World Cup in Long Island, N.Y. by setting a new U.S. Open record in the 800 short course meter free event with a time of 8:17.20. Rigamonti's time broke the old mark of 8:17.32 set over 20 years ago on January 8, 1982. Rigamonti's U.S. Open record was one of six U.S. Open records that fell Friday night, including three American records and one world record.
