DENVER Fresno States Jamie Southern and San Jose States Carol Forbes have been named the Western Athletic Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively. Southern eanred Pitcher of the Week honors last week, but this is her first Player of the Week award. This is the second career honor for Forbes, but her first this season.
Southern, a sophomore from Clovis, Calif., (Clovis) batted .333 (2-for-6) with two runs, a double, a walk, a RBI and three total bases for a .500 slugging percentage in a sweep of Southern Utah at home. In the first game, she pitched her second shutout on the year in the 7-0 victory, while she played first base in the nightcap. At the Kia Klassic, Southern batted .385 (5-for-13) and hit four home runs with eight RBI. The sophomore hit four home runs in two days. She slugged a pair of solo shots against No. 13 DePaul. The last time a Bulldog hit a pair of home runs in a game was Nina Lindenberg, who did it four times in 1997. She also added a three-run home run against No. 3 Nebraska and a two-run home run against Hawaii.
Forbes, a sophomore from Scottsdale, Ariz. (Horizon) was 2-0 last week with one start and two appearances. She threw one complete game. She pitched 10.2 innings, allowing four 4 hits with an 0.66 ERA. She allowed only one earned run, with four strikeouts, leading the Spartans to a 3-0 record in a rain-shortened week.
The sophomore struck out two in the game and allowed three hits and one earned run in seven innings pitched against Southern Utah. She pitched 3.2 innings of relief against Buffalo, allowing only one hit and struck out two in picking up a win in relief.
