Boise State Director of Athletics Gene Bleymaier has announced this afternoon that former Bronco coach Greg Patton, who led the Bronco mens tennis team from 1992 through 1998, has been rehired to again serve as the mens tennis head coach.
From 1992 through 1998, Patton led the Broncos to five conference championships, with his teams making four NCAA Regional Tournament appearances and the 1997 team finishing fifth nationally. Patton was named NCAA Coach of the Year in 1997 after the Broncos top five national finish. In addition to his national coach of the year honor while at Boise State, Patton was also named conference coach of the year five times. His Bronco coaching record is 135-48 for a 73.8 winning percentage.
Patton moved to U.S. national team coaching duties when he left Boise State, coaching primarily young up-and-coming players. He most recently led the national boys 14s team to a World Cup Championship, beating teams from Spain and Argentina to take the title. He has coached several junior players in the past five years to finish in the top five in the world rankings. He and his family have continued to live in Boise while he coached at the national level.
Patton will assume his responsibilities as the Boise State head mens coach immediately.
Ron Dibelius, current assistant to Bleymaier and a former mens and womens tennis head coach at Boise State, served as the interim coach for the past two weeks, leading the Broncos to home victories over Santa Clara and New Mexico.
The Bronco men (5-5) will host Idaho, Portland State and Sacramento State this coming Friday through Sunday, March 7-9, in the Boise State/Boas Indoor Tennis Center.
