Final Men's Bracket.pdf
Boise, Idaho - The Boise State men's tennis team defeated the SMU Mustangs, 4-2, in a wild match Sunday afternoon at the Appleton Tennis Center for the program's first WAC title in its second year in the conference. The Broncos

SMU won the doubles point to start the match. Then the teams went into singles, and the Broncos picked up their first point with senior and All-WAC honoree Marcus Berntson defeating Gwinyai Chingoka at number one, 6-3 6-3. Sophomore Matias Silva got the second point for Boise State with a 7-6 6-3 win over Ryan Mauck. (Silva was down 0-3 in the second set to come back and win.) Boise State picked up point three with freshman Thomas Schoeck defeating Henrik Doderberg at four, 7-5 7-6 (7-3 in the tie breaker). SMU then came back, winning its second point at number six when Peter Oredsson defeated Mahmoud Rezk 7-5 6-3. Freshman Nils Klemann clinched the match for the Broncos (he also was the Broncos's fourth point Friday against Tulsa) with a 4-6 6-1 6-2 win over Alexis Rudzinski. At two, BSU's Guillaume Bouvier and Johan Brunstrom did not finish.

While it was Boise State's first WAC Championship in a sport other than football, it was also coach Greg Patton's first WAC Championship in his first year back at Boise State after after leaving to coach for the US National Team in 1998. It was 10 years ago this same weekend that Patton coached the 1993 Broncos in his then first season to a surprise Big Sky title. Counting this season, Patton as won seven conference championships in three different conferences in eight seasons.

With the win the Broncos receive an automatic berth into the First Round of the NCAA Tennis Championship. The tournament will begin the weekend of May 9-11. Host sites for the first rounds will be announced in the next week.
The Broncos most successful trip in the NCAA tournament was 1997 when Boise State and coach Patton finished 5th in the nation.
