INDIANAPOLIS -- The NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Subcommittee has selected 64 teams that will compete in the 2003 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championships. Rice, SMU, Fresno State and 2003 WAC Champion, Boise State all made the field.
Boise State (17-7) opens the tournament in Berkley, Calif., against 9-10 Arizona, where the Golden Bears (18-4) will also host Sacramento State (12-15).
Fresno State (17-8) earned an at-large bid and will make the short trip to Stanford, Calif., where they will face Arizona State (9-11). The Cardinal (21-3) takes on Oral Roberts (8-13-1).
SMU (16-11) also earned an at-large bid and travels to Waco, Texas where its first-round match will be with instate rival TCU. Host, Baylor, faces UT-Arlington with the winner taking on either SMU or Baylor.
After suffering a first round loss to Boise State in the conference tournament, Rice enters the tournament at 19-7 and will face South Carolina (17-7) in Austin, Texas. Texas (17-6) takes on St. Bonaventure (13-8).
The selection of the teams for the championships is based on won-lost record, strength of schedule, and eligibility and availability of student-athletes.
The team championship, hosted by the University of Georgia will take place May 17-26 in Athens, Georgia.
The 64 singles players and 32 double teams that will compete in the 2003 Division I Men's Tennis Championships will be announced on www.ncaasports.com, Thursday, May 1, by 5 p.m. Central time.
