WAC Champion Hawai`i and runner-up Fresno State both advanced to the NCAA Softball Championship. The Rainbow Wahine will travel to Austin, Texas, while the Bulldogs will host the No. 2 Regional.
Hawai`i earned a No. 5 seed in Region 3 of the 2003 NCAA Tournament. Texas is the No. 3 seed overall and hosting the region.
The eight brackets were named today, and the Rainbow Wahine open up against the LSU Tigers (49-16) in the first game of Region 3 at 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 15. Bob Coolen's squad is fresh off its first WAC title posting an overall record of 37-18 and 17-3 in the league.
Fresno State (33-20), which finished second to Hawai`i in the WAC, is hosting Region 2. The Bulldogs are the No. 4 seed. UCLA is the No. 1 seed in Fresno. Fresno State will take on Long Beach State in its first game on May 15 at 10 a.m.
The top seeds in the NCAA Tournament are No. 1 Arizona, No. 2 UCLA, No. 3 Texas, No. 4 Oklahoma, No. 5 Washington, No. 6 Cal State Fullerton, No. 7 DePaul, and No. 8 is Alabama.
This is the first season that the tournament has been expanded to 64 teams. The tournament will consist of eight eight-team regionals.
