Louisiana Tech guard Amber Obaze was named one of six alternates to the 2003 USA Basketball Women's Pan Am Games and World Championship for Young Women Teams announced Sunday evening.
Obaze was one of 58 of the top collegiate players in the country invited to the trials that were held at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., Friday through Sunday.
The senior to be Lady Techster joins Boston College's Amber Jacobs, LSU's Temeka Johnson, Texas' Heather Schreiber, Texas' Stacy Stephens and Arkansas' Ruby Vaden as alternates on the two 12-member teams who could be called upon in case of an injury before or during the USA's training camp.
Ohio State's Jim Foster will coach the World Championship for Young Women's Team, which will be comprised of LSU's Seimone Augustus, Duke's Alana Beard, USC's Ebony Hoffman, UCSB's Kristen Mann, Ohio State's Caity Matter, Kansas State's Nicole Ohlde, Arizona's Shawntinice Polk, Rutgers' Cappie Poindexter, Georgia's Christi Thomas, Kansas State's Kendra Wecker, Minnesota's Lindsay Whalen and Penn State's Tanisha Wright.
Virginia's Debbie Ryan will coach the Pan Am Games Team that will consist of Vanderbilt's Jenni Benningfield, Georgetown's Rebekhah Brunson, Texas' Jamie Carey, transferring LSU letter winner Roneeka Hodges, Kansas State's Laurie Koehn, Minnesota's Janel McCarville, Tennessee's Loree Moore, Stanford's Nicole Powell, Connecticut's Ann Strother, UCSB's Lindsay Taylor, Duke's Iciss Tillis and Connecticut's Barbara Turner.
Obaze earned second team All-Western Athletic Conference and WAC All-Defensive Team honors following a junior campaign that saw the Dallas, Texas, native average 11.8 points, 3.8 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.7 steals per game.
