2003 WAC TOURNAMENT Fresno State knocked off Tulsa, 4-2 to take home its second-straight WAC crown at the 2003 WAC Championship in Boise, Idaho. Chloe Carlotti's three-set victory at No. 1 singles clinched top-seeded Fresno State's 4-2 victory over Tulsa.
It marks the third league title that the Bulldogs (16-7) have won since joining the WAC in 1992, including their second in a row. Since Kevin Epley took over as head coach prior to the 2000-01 season, Fresno State has played in the WAC finals each year.
The win also gives the Bulldogs an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament, which begins May 9 at campus sites around the nation.
In doubles action, TU's 57th-ranked tandem, Alicia Pillay and Aleksandra Durska, fell to Fresno's 15th-ranked duo, Carlotti and Lucia Tallo, 8-6, in the No. 1 doubles slot. Also for the Golden Hurricane Zoe Buhagiar and Daniela Muscolino dropped their match in the No. 3 position, 8-3 to Vlatka Jovanovic and Kristy McRae.
Fresno State's ninth-ranked Carlotti overcame 26th-ranked Pillay 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the No. 1 singles position, but Muscolino posted a 6-3, 6-4 win in the No. 3 slot for Tulsa over Lucia Sainz. Tiffany Smith netted the other point for the Golden Hurricane as she finished 6-2, 6-3 over Vlatka Jovanovic in the No. 4 position. Kathrin Winterhalter and McRae tallied the fifth and sixth singles points for the Bulldogs, 6-1, 6-0 and 6-4, 6-1, respectivley to gain the much needed points.
FRESNO STATE EARNS WACS AUTOMATIC BID IN NCAA TOURNAMENT The Fresno State women's tennis teams received the WAC's automatic bid into this year's NCAA Tournament, winning the WAC April 27. They are led by WAC Player of the Year, Chloe Carlotti.
The 20th-ranked Bulldogs (16-7) will travel to Tempe, Ariz., for their first and second round matches. The Bulldogs will play 27th-ranked San Diego State (22-5) in the first round on Saturday, May 10. A victory would place them in the second round against the winner of Illinois-Chicago (17-6) and No. 15-seed and host Arizona State (9-10).
The NCAA berth is the eighth in a row for the women's team, though they have never played a tournament match in Tempe, Ariz. Fresno State is 5-7 all-time in NCAA matches.
After the first two rounds of competition, the women's round of 16 through the finals takes place at the University of Florida on May 15-18.
NCAA TOURNAMENT SINGLES AND DOUBLES The NCAA announced the singles and doubles participants for the NCAA Womens Tennis Championships today. Fresno State placed one singles player and a doubles team in the tournament, while Tulsa had two singles players advance.
WAC Player of the Year, Chloe Carlotti, leads the way for Fresno State. Carlotti will play both singles and doubles. She is the only WAC womens tennis player to advance in both the singles and doubles tournaments. Carlotti will play doubles with Lucia Tallo, who earned first team all-WAC honors in singles and doubles. First team all-WAC honorees Aleksandra Durska and Alicia Pillay of Tulsa will both compete in the singles competition.
The NCAA Singles Championship begins on Monday, May 19 and runs through May 24, with one round played each day at the University of Florida. The NCAA Doubles Championship gets underway on Tuesday, May 20, as the competitors play one round each day capped with the final on May 24th.
The selection of teams and individuals for the NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championships is based on the prescribed criteria listed in the championships handbook and approved by the Division I Championships/Competition Cabinet.
Fresno State is the only WAC school that advanced to the team championship that begins on May 9. The Bulldogs will travel to Tempe, Ariz., and face San Diego State in the first round.
