2003 WAC TOURNAMENT Boise State defeated SMU, 4-2, in the final match of the 2003 WAC Championship at the Appleton Tennis Center in Boise, Idaho for the programs first WAC title in its second year in the conference.
SMU won the doubles point to start the match. Then the teams went into singles, and the Broncos picked up their first point with senior and all-WAC honoree Marcus Berntson defeating Gwinyai Chingoka at number one, 6-3, 6-3. Sophomore Matias Silva got the second point for Boise State with a 7-6 6-3 win over Ryan Mauck. Silva was down 0-3 in the second set to come back and win. Boise State picked up point three with freshman Thomas Schoeck defeating Henrik Soderberg at four, 7-5, 7-6 (7-3). SMU then came back, winning its second point at number six when Peter Oredsson defeated Mahmoud Rezk 7-5, 6-3. Freshman Nils Klemann clinched the match for the Broncos. He also was the Broncoss fourth point Friday against Tulsa with a 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 win over Alexis Rudzinski. At two, BSUs Guillaume Bouvier and Johan Brunstrom did not finish.
FOUR TEAMS MAKE NCAA TOURNAMENT - The NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Subcommittee has selected 64 teams that will compete in the 2003 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championships. Rice, SMU, Fresno State and 2003 WAC Champion, Boise State all made the field.
Boise State (17-7) opens the tournament in Berkley, Calif., against 9-10 Arizona, where the Golden Bears (18-4) will also host Sacramento State (12-15). Fresno State (17-8) earned an at-large bid and will make the short trip to Stanford, Calif., where it will face Arizona State (9-11). The Cardinal (21-3) takes on Oral Roberts (8-13-1). SMU (16-11) also earned an at-large bid and travels to Waco, Texas where its first-round match will be with instate rival TCU. Host, Baylor, faces UT-Arlington with the winner taking on either SMU or Baylor. After suffering a first round loss to Boise State in the conference tournament, Rice enters the tournament at 19-7 and will face South Carolina (17-7) in Austin, Texas. Texas (17-6) takes on St. Bonaventure (13-8).
The selection of the teams for the championships is based on won-lost record, strength of schedule, and eligibility and availability of student-athletes. The team championship, hosted by the University of Georgia will take place May 17-20 in Athens, Georgia.
NCAA TOURNAMENT SINGLES AND DOUBLES - The NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Subcommittee has selected 64 singles players and 32 doubles teams that will compete in the 2003 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championships. WAC Champion Boise State has one singles competitor, while Rice and Tulsa each place three. Rices doubles team of Richard and William Barker are the No. 1 seed in the doubles competition with Fresno State and Tulsa both placing one doubles team.
In singles action, Tulsa earned three of the four players in the central region. First team all-WAC honoree Alejandro Tejerina leads the charge for the Golden Hurricane along with second team members Dustin Taylor and Ryan Livesay. Taylor and Livesay will also re-team to play in the double competition.
Rice also has three athletes in the single competition and one pair in doubles action. The brother pair of Richard and William Barker will not only be the No. 1 seed in the doubles tournament, but will also take part in the single tournament. Robert Searle joins the Barkers in singles action. The Owls were well decorated in WAC play with Richard Barker earning WAC Player of the Year honors and Searle earning WAC Freshman of the Year honors. Rice plays in the South Central Region.
Boise States Marcus Bernston will represent the Mountain Region in the singles tournament. Bernston was a first team all-WAC performer who led the Broncos to their first WAC title. Fresno States team of Hector Alamada and Sergui Modoc will play in the doubles tournament. The pair, who were named first team all-WAC, represent the West Region.
The singles and doubles competition will be conducted May 21-26 in Athens, Ga., following the conclusion of the team championship (May 16-20). Each region receives an automatic entry of four singles players and two doubles teams.
