NCAA TEAM TOURNAMENTFirst Round - Fresno State rebounded from losing the doubles point to post a 4-2 victory over Arizona State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Stanford, Calif. The victory moves the Bulldogs (18-8) into the second round where they will meet Stanford at the Taube Tennis Center on the Stanford University campus. The Cardinal are the tournament's fifth seed.
Boise State claimed its seventh victory in a row and 15th out of the last 17 with a 4-1 decision over the Arizona Wildcats in the NCAA first round, May 10 at the Hellman Tennis Center in Berkeley. Arizona finished the regular season with a No. 34 national ranking while Boise State finished at No. 35 and the contest was as evenly matched as the rankings. Especially in doubles play as all three matches were played to decide who claimed the point.
Rice dropped the doubles point but answered by winning four singles matches, as the 33rd-ranked Owls upset 18th-ranked South Carolina 4-2 at the University of Texas' Penick-Allison Tennis Center. Rice then faced the 14th-ranked Longhorns. The nation's top-ranked doubles team of Richard and William Barker continued their winning streak by capturing their 31st consecutive doubles match, downing Angelo Niculescu and Geraldo Knorr 8-5 for Rice's only doubles victory.
Second Round - Stanford continued its push toward a possible 18th national title with a 4-0 defeat of Fresno State in the second round of the NCAA Tournament at the Taube Family Tennis Center in Stanford, Calif. The Cardinal (23-3), seeded fifth in the NCAA's, move to the round of 16 where they played Tulane.
It's difficult to beat a team three times in a single season and SMU looked to prove that statement in NCAA Men's Tennis first-round action versus 24th-ranked TCU in Waco, Texas. After winning the doubles point, the Mustangs could not capitalize on the momentum as the Horned Frogs won four singles matches to claim the first-round victory over SMU, 4-1. As a result, SMU finishes its season with a 16-12 dual record.
Boise State lost to the California Golden bears (seventh ranked) 4-1 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The No. 4 seed, California (20-4), advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 for the first time since 2001, with a 4-1 victory over Boise State in the second round of the NCAA Championships, May 11 at the Hellman Tennis Center in Berkeley.
Texas overcame a 3-1 deficit and took the final two matches in dramatic fashion, as the 14th-ranked Longhorns handed Rice a heartbreaking 4-3 defeat in the NCAA Regional Final at Penick-Allison Tennis Center. Leading UT 3-1 with three matches still to be decided, the Owls' (20-8) chances were looking good with Robert Searle forcing a third set at number one singles and Tony Haerle up 4-2 in the third set of his match against Pete Stroer in the number four spot. Jose Zarhi closed the gap to 3-2 for the Longhorns with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Richard Barker at number two singles. Jean Simon would defeat Searle 6-2, 5-7, 7-6 (10-8) before Stroer sealed the match for the Horns, overcoming deficits of 5-3 and 4-2 in the final two sets, respectively, to defeat Haerle 2-6, 7-5, 6-4.
NCAA SINGLES TOURNAMENTFirst Round - Boise States Marcus Berntson defeated 45th ranked Matias Marin of Baylor, 6-1 1-6 7-5 in the first round of the NCAA Singles Tournament.
William Barker upset 25th-ranked Philip King of Duke 6-2, 6-4, advancing to the second round of the NCAA Men's Tennis Championships at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. William Barker was Rices lone first-round winner, as 27th-ranked Robert Searle fell to UCLA's 24th-ranked Marcin Matkowski 6-2, 6-3, while Richard Barker was defeated by South Carolina's Seth Rose 6-2, 6-4 in first-round play.
Tulsa s Alejandro Tejerina upset Florida State's 34th-ranked Mat Cloer, 6-4, 6-2, in first round action to advance to the round of 32 at the NCAA Singles Tournament.
Second Round - Boise State s Marcus Berntson lost to the third seed and eventual champion, Amer Delic, from Illinois, 6-1 7-5, in the round of 32 in the NCAA Men's Singles National Tournament.
After a 12-year drought, William Barker became Rice's first singles all-America selection since 1992, defeating Pepperdine's Calle Hansen 6-4, 6-2 in the second round.
Tulsas Alejandro Tejerina lost a 6-3, 6-0 decision to Middle Tennessee State's 17th-ranked Daniel Klemetz, after advancing to the round of 32 with his first-round upset win.
Third Round - William Barker's run through the NCAA Men's Tennis Championships came to an end, as Columbia's Oscar Chow handed Barker a 6-2, 7-6 third-round defeat.
NCAA DOUBLES TOURNAMENTFirst Round - Fresno State's top doubles team of Hector Almada and Sergiu Modoc lost to second-seeded Oliver Maiberger and Ryan Redondo of San Diego State 6-3, 6-4 in the first round of the NCAA Doubles Tournament in Athens, Ga.
The top-seeded William and Richard Barker defeated LSU's Bryan Fisher and Jason Hazley 6-4, 6-2 to set up a second-round match against North Carolina's Trystan Meniane and Nicholas Monroe.
Tulsa's doubles tandem, Ryan Livesay and Dustin Taylor, advanced in the NCAA Doubles Championship, posting an impressive 7-5, 6-4 upset over Florida's 16th-ranked duo, Hamid Mirzadeh and Chris McDonald, to advance to tomorrow's round of 16.

Tulsas Ryan Livesay and Dustin Taylor advanced to the NCAA Doubles Championship quarterfinals with a 7-6, 1-6, 6-2 upset win over Auburn's 13th-ranked duo, Andrew Colombo and Rameez Junaid, in the round of 16.
Quarterfinals - Richard and William Barker continued to roll through the NCAA Men's Tennis Championships, winning their 35th consecutive doubles match and advancing to the semifinals after a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Tulane's Michael Kogan and Victor Romero.
Illinois' ninth-ranked Rajeev Ram and Brian Wilson overtook the Golden Hurricane tandem of Ryan Livesay and Dustin Taylor after three sets. Livesay and Taylor surprised the Illinois duo with a 7-5 upset, but Tulsa fell in a tough second set 6-4. TU couldn't hold on to the match, dropping the final set 6-1.
Semifinals - Richard and William Barker's quest to bring Rice its first outdoor national doubles championship since 1947 came up short, as Illinois' Rajeev Ram and Bryan Wilson upset the Owls' top-seeded duo 7-6 (7-1), 7-5 in the semifinals of the NCAA Men's Tennis Championships. Ram and Wilson went on to claim the 2003 doubles title.

The ITA/Arthur Ashe Award for Leadership and Sportsmanship goes to a player who has exhibited outstanding sportsmanship and leadership as well as scholastic, extracurricular and tennis achievements. The Rafeal Osuna Award goes to a mens player who displays sportsmanship, character, excellent academics, and has had outstanding tennis accomplishments. The ITA Player to Watch Award goes to a player who has an outstanding season and is expected to perform at a high level the rest of his or her career. This awards criteria also includes a players sportsmanship and character. The John Van Nostrand Memorial Award is a stipend that goes to an outstanding senior men's player who plans to pursue a professional career after college.
2003 WAC TOURNAMENT Boise State defeated SMU, 4-2, in the final match of the 2003 WAC Championship at the Appleton Tennis Center in Boise, Idaho for the programs first WAC title in its second year in the conference.
SMU won the doubles point to start the match. Then the teams went into singles, and the Broncos picked up their first point with senior and all-WAC honoree Marcus Berntson defeating Gwinyai Chingoka at number one, 6-3, 6-3. Sophomore Matias Silva got the second point for Boise State with a 7-6 6-3 win over Ryan Mauck. Silva was down 0-3 in the second set to come back and win. Boise State picked up point three with freshman Thomas Schoeck defeating Henrik Soderberg at four, 7-5, 7-6 (7-3). SMU then came back, winning its second point at number six when Peter Oredsson defeated Mahmoud Rezk 7-5, 6-3. Freshman Nils Klemann clinched the match for the Broncos. He also was the Broncoss fourth point Friday against Tulsa with a 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 win over Alexis Rudzinski. At two, BSUs Guillaume Bouvier and Johan Brunstrom did not finish.
