Former Fresno State golf standout and three-time WAC Player of the Year, Nick Watney, became the second consecutive non-member to win a Canadian tour title, at the Lewis Chitengwa Memorial Championship. UTEP golfer Chris Baryla finished runner-up in the 2003 Canadian Amateur Championship at the Shaughnessy Golf & Country Club in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Watney played on a sponsor's exemption and carded a final round 68. His four-day total of 20-under 268 was five shots better than Derek Gillespie (Oshawa, Ontario), Alan McLean (South Africa) and Alex Quiroz (Mexico).
The 27th-seeded Baryla was defeated 4&3 by top seed Richard Scott on the 33rd hole of the 36-hole match. After winning the first hole of the match, Baryla trailed by one going into the final 18 holes. He won only two holes to Scott's five in the final round. Baryla earned himself an exemption into the 2003 Bell Canadian Open Sept. 1-7 at the Hamilton Golf and Country Club.
