PLAYERS OF THE WEEKOffensiveDanielle Fauteux, a sophomore from Kamloops, B.C., Canada, scored four goals in the Hurricanes first two games, registering eight points in two Tulsa wins. Fauteux tallied the third and final goals against Stephen F. Austin in a 5-0 win. She followed up that performance with another pair of goals, including the game winner, in a, 2-1, win over Arkansas.
DefensiveKyla Clark, a sophomore from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, posted a shutout in her first match of the season. In the double-overtime win, Clark registered 109:21 minutes of play. Clark did not play in the Miners second match of the weekend due to injury.

THIS WEEK IN THE WAC - The WAC is coming off a tough 8-10 opening weekend. There were three matches with NSCAA/adias preseason top 25 teams, including No. 1 Santa Clara (SJSU) and No. 6 Texas A&M (SMU). This week, San Jose State continues its tough opening schedule, taking on No. 22 Pepperdine, and 2002 NCAA Champion, No. 18 Portland. It is a homecoming for WAC schools, as each team but Hawaii plays at least one match at home this weekend. Hawaii travels to the mainland, taking on Northridge, Long Beach and Riverside. Boise State opens its new field, hosting Idaho State. Nevada and Rice look for their first wins of the season, taking on Northern Arizona and SW Texas State, respectivley. UTEP is home this weekend, hosting the Borderland Shootout. Texas Tech travels to Dallas for a match-up with SMU, while Tulsa takes on Arkansas-Little Rock and Drury.
WAC vs. THE TOP 25 - The Western Athletic Conference is 0-3 against the NSCAA/adidas top 25 this season. San Jose State fell to top ranked Santa Clara, 9-1. No. 22 SMU suffered a 3-1 loss to No. 6 Texas A&M. Fresno State fell to No. 14 Tennessee, 3-1.
AROUND THE WACBoise State dropped a pair of matches at the Oregon Tournament and completed its three-game road trip to Oregon Sept. 2, where they defeated the Big Skys Portland State, 2-1. The Broncos will open their new on-campus facility this weekend when they host two schools that advanced to the 2002 NCAA Tournament. They open with rival Idaho State the defending Big Sky champions on Friday followed by a Sunday match against Cal Poly, the 2002 Big West champions.
Fresno State will be aiming to climb back over the .500 mark after earning a split during its two-game road trip last week against Charlotte and No. 14 Tennessee. The Bulldogs host Sacramento State, Sept. 6. The Bulldogs shocked UNC-Charlotte 3-1 in the season opener on Aug. 29, scoring three first-half goals to put away the 49ers.
Hawaii junior transfer Robin deHay tied a school-record with three assists versus Bowling Green. All-tournament selections included Natasha Kai, deHay, junior defender Krystalynn Ontai, junior defender Jessica Uecker and senior midfield Mia Moe. Hawaii next plays three straight road games at Cal State Northridge (Sept. 5), Long Beach State (Sept. 7) and UC Riverside (Sept. 8).
Nevada opened the 2003 season with a 3-0 loss to Cal Poly in a non-conference match on Aug. 29 at Mustang Stadium. The Wolf Pack and Mustangs battled to a scoreless tie in the first 45 minutes of the match. Cal Poly outshot Nevada 10-3. Sophomore goalkeeper Megan Tarpenning recorded three saves in the first half and finished the match with five.
For the second year in a row Rice has opened its season with a pair of losses. The Owls allowed one goal each to San Francisco and tournament host Oregon. The Rice defense was paced by sophomore Erin Droeger and true freshman Laura Barber, who were both named to the Invitational's all-tournament team. Junior keeper Lauren Shockley made 11 saves while logging all 180 minutes in goal. The program's career points leader, junior midfielder Sara Yoder (29 points in two seasons), led the squad with seven shots on goal. The Blue & Gray will face a pair of state rivals in games this week. Rice meets the newly named Texas State in its 2003 home-opener on Friday, Sept. 5. The Owls then travel to Denton for a showdown with the University of North Texas on Sunday, Sept. 7.
San Jose State scored two goals within two minutes of each other in the second half as the Spartan womens soccer team defeated Pacific 2-1 Aug. 29 in a non-conference match at the Spartan Soccer Field. The Spartans faced the nations top-ranked team in Santa Clara. The Broncos took 31 shots, 16 on goal, and the Spartans got only three shots on goal as the Spartans fell to the Broncos, 9-1. The Spartan schedule doesnt get any easier, as they take on 22nd ranked Pepperdine and No. 18 Portland this weekend.
SMU ... The last time SMU scored in double-digit figures was nearly 10 years ago when the Mustangs shut out Oral Roberts, 10-0, Sept. 18, 1993. The 10-1 win over Sam Houston State was only the fourth time in the progams history that SMU scored 10 or more goals. Kim Harvey collected her second career hat trick, posting three goals against Sam Houston State. The Lady Mustangs open the home portion of thier season schedule Sept. 5 as Texas Tech comes to Dallas. SMU holds a 3-0 edge over the Red Raiders. It has been five years since the Mustangs have taked on Texas Tech.
UTEP ... opened the 2003 season with a thrilling 1-0 double-overtime victory against Louisiana-Monroe on Aug. 29 at University Field. Freshman Sarah Graef knocked in a 15-yard score with :39 seconds remaining in the final overtime period to give the Miners the win. Graef was set up in front of the net off passes by Kate Stevens and Ann Birchall. UTEP had its nine-game home winning streak snapped with it's 2-1 loss to Centenary College on Aug. 31. UTEP's previous home loss came against SMU to end the 2001 season.
Tulsa ... The last time Tulsa began the season 2-0 was during the 2000 campaign when the Hurricane finished 13-6-1 overall and advanced to the WAC Championship match. TU also recorded 2-0 starts in 1989, 1992 and 1993. Katie Ward and Kristie Keirsey, a pair of freshmen, each recorded solid outings in the first two games of the year. Keirsey scored one goal and registered one assist for three points against Stephen F. Austin, while Ward earned assists on both of Danielle Fauteux's goals against Arkansas.
SMU FAVORED TO WIN 2003 CROWN - SMU is coming off a 13-6-4 season in 2002 that saw the Mustangs fall just short of the NCAA Round of 16, losing to Texas A&M in the penatly kick session at the NCAA Tournament. The Mustangs are returning seven starters including junior defender Amanda Jordan, a 2002 first team all-WAC selection. Kim Harvey, a second-team member also returns for her senior season. The Mustangs will enter the 2003 season under the helm of new head coach John Cossaboon, the former head coach of San Diego. He replaces George Van Linder who ran the Mustang program for four years before leaving for Baylor.
FACING THE NATIONS BEST Seventeen teams that participated in the 2002 NCAA Tournament will be opponents of WAC teams this season. The list includes the likes of 2002 National Champion Portland, 2001 NCAA champion, Santa Clara and Pepperdine.
