DENVER The Board of Directors of the Western Athletic Conference today approved Reno and the University of Nevada as the co-hosts of the 2006 Western Athletic Conference Men and Womens Basketball Tournament, it was announced by Board Chairman and Boise State President Dr. Robert Kustra.
The 2006 tournament was awarded as a result of a joint bid by the University of Nevada and the Reno-Sparks Convention and Visitors Authority.
The tournament will be played March 7-11 in Nevadas 11,200-seat Lawlor Events Center. Reno is also the site of this years WAC Tournament, March 8-12, 2005.
Nevada has hosted several other WAC Championships since joining the conference in 2000 including this years volleyball tournament for the third consecutive season. As a member of the Big West Conference, Nevada also served as that conferences tournament host on five occasions from 1996-2000.
There is already a tremendous amount of excitement for this years tournament in Reno, so a second year will only help the event continue to grow, said WAC Commissioner Karl Benson. The Reno-Lake Tahoe area is a great site for our tournament that will provide plenty of entertainment and vacation opportunities for our fans.
