RUSTON, La. The 2004 WAC Cross Country Championship was held today at Lincoln Parish Park in Ruston, La., with the Rice men and SMU women taking home the team titles at 27 and 30 points, respectivley. The men started the day, with the Owls winning their first team title since 2001. Junior Marcel Hewamudalige earned top honors posting a time of 24:57.13, becoming the first Owl to win individual honors. The title earned Hewamudalige 2004 WAC Athlete of the Year honors. For the women Kate Gorry of Rice took home the title and was named WAC Athlete of the Year, in a time of 17:01.59.
On the mens side, Rice scored 27 points to finish ahead of 2003 champion, Tulsa, which had 79 points. In third place was UTEP with a total of 80 points, while Boise State finished fourth with 96 points. Rounding out the mens field was host, Louisiana Tech, which registered 102 points and San Jose State which was sixth at 153. After champion Hewamudalige, was 2003 champion, Mircea Bogdan of UTEP who posted a time of 24:57.99. In third was Forest Braden of Boise State with a time of 24:58.60. The title for the Rice men earned head coach Jon Warren Coach of the Year.
The top seven finishers earn first-team all WAC honors. In fourth place for the men was Rices Stephen Maganess (25:04.22), in fifth was UTEPs Stephen Samoei (25:09.62), who was the top freshman, and was named the 2004 WAC Freshman of the Year. Taking home sixth was Scott Loftin of Rice in a time of 25:35.15, while in seventh place with a time of 25:35.15 was Adam Davis of Rice.
On the womens side, SMU scored 30 points, out-distancing Rice which finished second with 88 points. Mustangs head coach John Rembao was named WAC Coach of the Year for his teams effort. In third was UTEP with 97 points. Taking fourth place was Nevada with 121 points, edging Hawaii which had 122 points. Rounding out the field for the women were, Boise State (141), San Jose State, (162), Fresno State (172), and Tulsa with 173. Louisiana Tech did not score.
Finishing closely behind Gorry, was 2001 WAC Champion, Karin van Rooyen of SMU, as she posted a time of 17:06.80. Taking home the bronze was UTEPs Adriana Pirtea who crossed in 17:23.83. In fourth for the women was Rachael Forish of SMU, who with the finish, earned the WAC Freshman of the Year honors. Completing the first team all-WAC for the women, were Marissa Daniels of Rice in fifth, Nicole Kelleher of SMU in sixth and Rachel Collins of SMU who finished seventh.
