DENVER Rices Marcel Hewamudalige and SMUS Karin van Rooyen have been named the Western Athletic Conference mens and womens cross country Athletes of the Week, respectively.

Hewamudalige, a junior from Vancouver, B.C., Canada, helped Rice to the team title with a first-place finish at the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islander Opener Splash. He clocked a 25:37 on the 8K course. It was the second-consecutive race Hewamudalige has won this season.

van Rooyen, a senior from Ermelo, South Africa, won the 13th annual Murray Keating Invite in a personal-best time of 17:02 for the 5k event. Her time is the fifth-best ever at the meet. Of the four women with better times, two were national champions.
