PLAYER OF THE MONTH Tulsa sophomore Kindsay Grimes has been named September's Western Athletic Conference women's tennis player of the month.
Grimes helped lead a dominant TU women's team at the Hurricane Invitational with a 4-0 record in singles play. Grimes also went 1-2 in the Baylor Invitational. In doubles play Kindsay has a 2-3 record, including winning two matches at the Hurricane Invitational. At the Hurricane Invitational, Grimes (TU) defeated Alejandra Ripoll (WSU) 6-0, 6-0 and Daniela Renovales (ISU) 6-1, 6-3. She also beat Liz Bingier (ISU) 6-4, 6-7, 6-4, and Emilie Sechaud (ISU) 2-6, 6-0, 7-5.
OTHERS NOMINATED Louisiana Tech's Avril Martinez won both of her matches played at the Stephen. F. Austin Fall, taking a 6-0, 6-1 Flight F singles win over Lamar's Julie Paciotti and teaming with Saharai Uriarte for a 8-5 Flight A doubles win over Northeast Oklahoma State's tandem of Holley McKee and Bergit Itschert Rice's Blair DiSesa opened the season ranked 58th in the ITA preseason rankings and went 3-3 during September and advanced to the round of 16 at the Baylor Fall Invitational ... SMU's Jennifer Choy made the final of the Rice Invitational Classic UTEP's Katherine Palider went 6-1 in UTEP's first two tournaments (3-1) at Miner Fall Invitational and 3-0 at the Wyoming Fall Invite.
WAC TOURNAMENT TO BE HELD IN HONOLULU This season, the Western Athletic Conference Tournament will be held in Honolulu, Hawaii on the campus of the University of Hawaii, April 21-24. The 2004 champion, Fresno State, will look to win its third-straight title.
WAC AT ITA ALL-AMERICAN QUALIFYING TOURNAMENT Rice's Blair DiSesa lost her first round match in the qualifying tournament, but rebounded in the back draw with a straight-set win, Tuesday at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships at the Riviera Tennis Club.
Lucia Tallo and Katharina Winterhalter both lost in the first round of the singles qualifying on Tuesday at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships, being played this week in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
Tallo, currently ranked 76th in the nation, was bounced by No. 41 Maja Kovacek of New Mexico 4-6, 6-2, 6-4. But she came back in the consolation bracket later on Tuesday and pulled off a 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory over 69th-ranked Barbara Orlay of North Carolina State.
This years qualifying singles draw includes 50 players from the ITA preseason top-100 rankings. Players in the qualifying tournament must win three matches to reach the Oct. 7-10 main draw. Eight singles players will advance to the main draw.
TULSA HAS STRONG FALL Junior Daniela Muscolino is now tied for 11th place in career singles wins at Tulsa with 47. Freshman Carla Zabaleta went 5-0 at the Hurricane Invitational in doubles and singles.
